This journey-level role involves operating a range of highway equipment and tools for the maintenance and repair of highways and structures, ensuring safe and efficient transportation. Under the guidance of a Highway Maintenance Worker 3, the position may also involve leading a crew and performing advanced maintenance tasks. The role emphasizes the importance of creating a respectful and inclusive work environment. Join us in supporting WSDOT's mission to enhance community and economic vitality through reliable transportation solutions.What to ExpectAmong the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Highway Maintenance Worker 2 will:• Perform snow and ice control operations during winter conditions.• Maintain equipment by conducting daily checks and minor repairs.• Clean crew rooms, storage areas, truck bays, and other WSDOT facilities using various cleaning products.• Operate trucks and equipment to remove snow and ice from road surfaces.• Maintain stockpile sites and load trucks with materials such as sand and gravel.• Execute highway maintenance tasks, including asphalt and concrete pavement repair.• Conduct drainage maintenance and repair on various structures and features.• Install and repair guardrails, fences, and other safety features.• Respond to emergencies, including traffic control and accident scenes.• Plan and implement safety procedures, including cleanup and disposal of hazardous materials.QualificationsTo be considered for this opportunity, the following are required:• High school graduation or GEDAND• Two (2) years of highway maintenance, logging, farming, excavation, or heavy equipment experience or other related work experience.OR• One (1) year of experience as a Highway Maintenance Worker 1 or equivalent.In addition, the following:• Valid Washington State CDL Class A or B driver’s license with endorsement “N” and without air brake restriction, with a valid medical card.• Ability to operate Class A, B, and C equipment w/current technology in highway maintenance operations.• Ability to work long hours outdoors, in various weather types, day and night. It also involves navigating rough terrain, working at heights, and being exposed to hazardous materials and chemicals.• Must be available to work on weekends and holidays as needed for business operations or to respond to unscheduled emergencies. Report to the assigned duty station within 60 minutes if called after hours. Work alternate and emergency shifts as assigned and must be able to respond to emergencies in all weather conditions, 24/7, either alone or as part of a team. May work more than 40 hours per week as required.• Ability to manipulate 50 lbs. in a safe manner.It is preferred that qualified candidates also have the following:• Washington State Traffic Control/Flagging Card• Washington State Pesticide Applicator’s License• Backflow Prevention Tester Certification• Crane CertificateImportant Notes• This recruitment may also be used to fill additional positions per business needs• This position is not eligible for remote work.• This is a non-permanent opportunity, expected to last 6 months.• Typical schedule for this position is 40 hours per week, working 4, 10-hour shifts from 4:00 AM to 2:30 PM.• Must maintain a valid Washington State CDL Class A or B Driver’s License with “N” endorsement and without air brake restriction throughout employment.• WSDOT does not use the E-Verify system; therefore, we are not eligible to extend STEM Optional Practical Training (OPT).
