POSITION DETAILS

Guttman Community College at CUNY seeks a dynamic, entrepreneurial, and student-centered specialist to become a Student Success Advocate supporting students' academic, professional, and personal success and persistence from recruitment through graduation.

Reporting to the Director of Advising & Transfer Services, the Student Success Advocate will be responsible for supporting the success of incoming, first-year, and continuing students. Prior to students' matriculation, the Student Success Advocate helps prospective students understand the College's educational model.

Additional responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Conduct group and individual information sessions for students and supporters, facilitating orientation sessions, and presenting to professionals such as counselors and teachers.
  • Assist with the development, coordination, and facilitation of the Guttman Bridge Program.
  • Manage and monitor a caseload of first-year students, monitoring and tracking student progress toward degree using technology and other means.
  • Assist students with registration and continuous enrollment as well as navigating course selection, policies, and procedures.
  • Plan and facilitate sections of first-year group advising session/first-year seminar, a required component of the first-year experience; lead weekly sessions and collaborate with faculty.
  • Conduct proactive advising for all students on course enrollment, early career choices, academic standing, and other policies; aid in promoting and implementing timely degree attainment measures, including interventions related to academic status and success.
  • Meet with instructional team members to plan activities and monitor student progress.
  • Train students on web-based platforms such as Degreeworks, CUNYfirst, Blackboard, Starfish, and Schedule Builder.
  • Report on activities and outcomes; assist with report writing, assessment, and data collection.
  • Serve on appropriate College and University Committees, as needed.

Until further notice, this is a hybrid position, eligible to work remotely and in the office.

This immersive approach equips Guttman students with the foundation of knowledge and skills essential to their intellectual, social, civic, and professional endeavors in and beyond the classroom. The College admitted its first cohort of 300 students in August 2012 and has established an enrollment target of approximately 5,000 students in the coming years. QUALIFICATIONS

A Master's degree in an appropriate discipline (e.g., counseling, guidance, social work, or psychology) and two years' related experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Three or more years of counseling, academic, and/or career advising/student development experience with diverse student populations, particularly under-prepared high school or college students in an educational setting or program
  • Crisis management experience strongly preferred
  • Experience working in learning communities
  • Multilingual ability preferred with strong presentation, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills to successfully work with and present to diverse audiences
  • Experience working well with linguistically, culturally, and academically diverse students
  • Strong work ethic, character and personal integrity, and ability to work with the utmost professionalism, discretion, and confidentiality
  • Detail oriented with strong writing, analytical, evaluative, and organizational skills
  • Ability to work well in a time-sensitive, dynamic, student centered and responsive office
  • Flexibility to work evening hours and occasional weekends

CUNY TITLE OVERVIEW

Provides educational programs, academic advice, and counseling assistance to students in one of CUNY's comprehensive support programs.

  • Provides advice and counsel to students covering academic, social, career, and related issues, making appropriate referrals as needed
  • Determines areas of need and develops and teaches orientation programs, seminars, student workshops, and other activities
  • Develops interventions related to student academic status and success
  • Reports on activities and outcomes, assisting with report-writing and data collection
  • Collaborates with academic and student support departments to ensure students are utilizing available services and programming
  • Performs related duties as assigned.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

$70,238 - $75,465 Salary commensurate with education and experience.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: Health Plan Coverage for Employees Hired on or after October 1, 2022 City of New York employees and employees of Participating Employers and their eligible dependents hired on or after October 1, 2022 will only be eligible to enroll in the EmblemHealth HIP HMO Preferred Plan and must remain in the HIP HMO Preferred Plan for the first year (365 days) of employment.

After 365 days of employment, the employee will have the option of either remaining in the HIP HMO Preferred Plan or selecting a different health plan within 30 days before the end of the 365th day period.

If a new health plan is selected, the new plan will be effective on the 366th day.

Only after the 365th day can the employee participate in any Annual Fall Transfer Period. An employee who needs to request an exemption from the required enrollment in the HIP HMO Preferred Plan can do so by submitting a HIP HMO Opt-Out Request Form to EmblemHealth. An employee, or eligible dependent, must meet certain criteria and the request must be approved by EmblemHealth before the exemption is granted. The HIP HMO Opt-Out Request Form and HIP service area are available on the EmblemHealth website.
