Job Description

Demonstrates the ability to provide lactation management to expectant and new parents in accordance with hospital's philosophy, policies, procedures, and standards. Supports System and Nursing Strategic Plans, Relationship-Based Care, and Shared Leadership.

  • Assists with planning, teaching, and evaluation classes for expectant and new breastfeeding mothers.
  • Selects appropriate breastfeeding supplies for the patient use and conducts daily bedside lactation rounds and consults with mothers having breastfeeding problems.
  • Coordinates a comprehensive individualized plan of care for the client, significant other and healthcare provider to obtain expected outcomes partnering with the patient and family to identify and prioritize needs and care.
  • Determines both the client’s progress towards the attainment of expected outcomes and the effectiveness of nursing care.
  • Plans, organizes, and delivers lactation management services to all breastfeeding patients.
  • Demonstrates the ability to lead, organize and develop lactation programs and conducts quality assurance programs to monitor the caliber of the program.
  • Systematically and continually collects data regarding the health status of the client. The data is recorded, accessible and communicated to appropriate members of the Multidisciplinary Healthcare Team utilizing system policies, and procedures.
  • Demonstrates ability in planning, delegation, and coordination of work group activities essential for the provision of quality nursing care.
  • Based on unit census and acuity, may assist in backing up cesarean sections and providing initial newborn care.  May also provide care to laboring patients, postpartum mothers, or newborns.
  • Seeks and supports opportunities for professional growth and development.
  • Offers support and feedback to peers and staff. Applies principles of caring and healing in interactions with patients and families and with colleagues.
  • Plans, teaches, and conducts in-service education for the staff.
  • Supports Shared Leadership and encourages staff participation on unit-based teams.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Active RN license to practice in the state of Maryland required.
  • Meets licensing requirements to practice registered nursing in the State of Maryland.  Must meet all applicable federal, state, and local professional requirements. 
  • Previous three years of experience in the specialty
  • Lactation certification preferred.
