SummaryAbout the Position: You will perform crane operating duties in connection with the operation, maintenance, and repair of waterways and waterway structures such as locks, bridges, and spillways in support of the Hampton Roads Drift Removal (HRD) and Prevention of Obstructive Deposits (POD) missions including removal of hazards to navigation throughout the Norfolk District. Work is performed throughout the tidal waters of the Commonwealth of Virginia.Learn more about this agencyHelpDuties• Operate floating boom cranes at various outdoor locations with limited maneuverability and where accuracy is critical.• Load and unload construction material, debris, machinery, or equipment to and from the barge or shore storage areas; Remove trees, logs, debris, obstructions, and snags from waterways and from around locks bridges and other structures.• Operate outboard motor-powered skiff while investigating surface or underwater objects away from vessel.• Perform ship rigging, including installation and repair. Rigs, equips, and stows rowboat and life rafts.• Make minor repairs to crane, hoisting machinery, and gear, and assist in renewal of parts and on major repairs. I have the ability to perform common duties of operating a floating crane and determine lifting capacity of various booms lengths and angles. I work under normal supervision of a work leader or journey-level employee who observes tasks in progress and upon completion to make sure they are properly performed. - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating.• Ability To Do The Work Of The Position Without More Than Normal Supervision (Screen-out Element)• Ability to Drive Safely (Motor Vehicles) and Ability to Operate Safely (Non-Motor Vehicle)• ABILITY TO INTERPRET INSTRUCTIONS, SPECIFICATIONS ETC. (INCLUDING BLUEPRINT READING)• Operation of Motor Vehicles• Reliability And Dependability• Work Practices (includes keeping things neat, clean, and in order)• PHYSICAL EFFORT: Work requires technical control changes to maneuver the crane and load around obstructions and to position the load at the desired location. Work requires heavy effort in pushing, pulling, and depressing various levers, clutches, and brakes. The incumbent is subject to strain caused by vibrations of the crane and from the jerking and jolting motions while lifting and moving loads. Hand and eye coordination is required when operating controls to maneuver vessel or crane in congested and confined areas. Work occasionally requires moving objects by hand (up to 50 pounds) such as lifting hooks and cables, changing rigging, etc.• WORKING CONDITIONS: Incumbent works outdoors in a partially enclosed cab in all types of weather. Incumbent is exposed to loud, unpleasant noise, heat, and fumes produced by the engine.
