Position Summary

Under the direction of the Associate Director of Safety and Environmental Health, the Environmental Health and Fire Prevention Analyst leads college-wide efforts in developing, monitoring and coordinating fire prevention, life safety and environmental health programs.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Advises the college community regarding life safety, fire prevention and environmental protection to ensure regulatory compliance as mandated by local, state, and federal agencies, including the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), National Consensus Standards such as NFPA, International Fire Code (IFC), Federal Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) and the New Mexico Environment Department (NMED).
  • Leads the College-wide effort in developing, updating, and implementing environmental protection and fire prevention programs.
  • Serves as a technical expert advising the Campus Safety Committee and Management in applicable life safety, fire prevention and environmental protection compliance issues.
  • Schedules, reviews, evaluates, monitors, and maintains third-party vendor relations for fire prevention equipment inspections, hazardous waste management, bio waste management, universal waste management, and other environmental protection activities.
  • Performs analysis and data management of college-wide information related to fire, life safety, hazardous waste, bio waste, universal waste and environmental protection programs.
  • Prepares reports and trending analysis for compliance conditions of life safety, fire prevention and environmental health protection.
  • Oversees or conducts (when needed) monthly fire equipment inspections and Automated External Defibrillators (AED's) inspections.
  • Conducts routine and follow-up inspections of buildings, classrooms, laboratories and college facilities and ensures that all problems discovered are corrected.
  • Researches applicable codes for life safety, fire prevention, and environmental protection compliance issues.
  • Supports Risk Management efforts to monitor, develop and implement college-wide safety programs and participates in the development and implementation of programs, when programs overlap or the needs of the department change.
  • Performs or coordinates industrial hygiene studies (light, noise, air samples) in areas identified by environmental health protection programs.
  • Creates, evaluated, coordinates, and conducts life safety, fire prevention and environmental protection training.
  • Responds to Creates, evaluates, coordinates, and conducts life safety, fire prevention, and environmental protection trainings.
  • Responds to emergency situations involving hazardous materials, radiation, or fire and smoke incidents; prepares reports of findings and submits recommendations.
  • Analyzes accident and incident reports for trends; makes recommendations for correcting unsafe conditions and actions.
  • Assists in the development or implementation of Risk Management safety programs.
  • Leads and/or supervises the work of lower-level safety technicians and/or student employees.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Associates degree in fire science, environmental health or a directly related field

AND

  • Three (3) years' direct experience in life safety, fire prevention, hazardous waste, biowaste, or another environmental health profession.

Preferred Qualifications :

Hazardous Materials Operations (HAZMAT Ops)

International Code Council (ICC) Certification – Fire Inspector Level 1 and 2

National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET) Fire Alarm Systems and Sprinkler System Certification
