Department of Revenue is recruiting for a Public Service Representative 4 position. We are looking for talented, detail-oriented individuals to join our Personal Tax & Compliance Division in the Refund Protection and Review Unit. This position is headquartered in our Salem office; however, the successful candidate may be eligible for in state hybrid work.  Hybrid work consists of performing duties onsite in a standard office environment and working remotely. 

In order to be considered for Department of Revenue recruitments, you must reside within the state of Oregon. Current Revenue employees who live outside of Oregon may apply and will be considered.

What You Will Be Doing

Below is a sampling of job duties. It is not meant to encompass all duties.

  • Specialized taxpayer identity verification and wage and withholding cross-checking are part of a multilayered defense network designed to ensure taxpayer information is protected.

  • Analyzing income tax returns for possible fraud patterns based on training provided using independent thinking and reasoning. Use a specialized on-line computer system (GenTax) to verify or adjust original

  • or amended income tax returns on all residency statuses that are identified by the fraud manager system.

  • GenTax identifies returns that are outside parameters programmed into the system. Using information available on the return, information from other states and other state agencies, general tax law information, and independent judgment, verify whether the return need to be adjusted or is fraudulent.

This Is What You Need To Qualify
three years of experience performing public contact and/or customer service duties comparable to the work of a Public Service Representative.

At least two years of this experience must include dealing with the public in-person or by phone providing information about services and programs; explaining rules, programs, and procedures; and/or providing assistance, explaining requirements, and gaining compliance.

Preference may be given for experience providing service in an area of specialization specific to the position opening.

The ideal candidate will possess the following desired skills and attributes:

  • Strong work ethic, approachable and team oriented.

  • Excellent communication skills, oral and written.

  • Current GenTax user with good navigation skills.

  • Effective critical thinking, decision-making and problem-solving skills.

  • The ability to work independently and with little supervision.

  • The salary listed is the non-PERS qualifying salary range. If the successful candidate is PERS qualifying, the salary range will reflect the additional 6.95%.
