Director of Nursing (DON)
SUPERVISED BY: HSA
SUPERVISES: Nursing Staff
GENERAL DUTIES:
A. Manages and evaluates nursing care delivery in accordance with PCM policies and procedures.
B. Ensures that nursing practice complies with established nursing standards.
C. Acts as liaison between nursing staff, PCM administration and facility administration.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
A. Report to and meet with HSA on a regular basis.
B. Prepare reports as required.
C. Maintain a professional nursing attitude at all times. Maintain a professional working relationship with facility staff, unit staff, contracted providers, outside service providers and Corporate Staff. Is tactful and diplomatic at all times. Functions as a role model for nursing staff.
D. Make use of established Corporate and Facility policies and procedures in decision-making.
E. Must use factual data and sound independent judgment in meeting the responsibilities and performing the duties of this position.
F. Interpret and ensure compliance with established standards of PCM and NCCHC/ACA.
G. Orient, supervise and evaluate performance of nursing personnel.
H. Assign and direct nursing staff.
I. Develop and monitor work schedules and provide coverage with appropriate staff to maintain adequate staffing levels.
J. Counsel and discipline employees who violate established policies/procedures of PCM or the facility. Each phase of the disciplinary process must be approved by the HSA prior to implementing.
K. Ensure that the proper flow of relevant information (policies, procedures, in-services, problems) is disseminated to supervisor and supervised personnel.
L. Prepare and submit required reports according to need.
M. Audit medical records per Quality Assurance audit criteria and report deficiencies to QA Committee.
N. Regularly monitor and evaluate nursing services to avoid the inappropriate use and/or duplication of services. Advise HSA if these situations arise.
O. Monitor, evaluate and recommend methods to improve operational efficiency and cost containment effectiveness.
P. Monitor and ensure strict compliance to all applicable pharmacy regulations.
Q. Monitor stock inventories and requests for needed supplies and equipment from HSA.
R. Monitor and evaluate physical safety requirements for inmates/patients and staff to ensure a safe working environment.
S. Assist HSA in coordinating and/or providing in-service programs which are aligned with the medical program (at least monthly). T. Attend scheduled meeting and provide minutes as well as follow up to identified problem areas.
U. Assist HSA to coordinate and/or conduct monthly health care staff meetings.
V. Maintain unit nursing operations at all times to meet NCCHC/ACA Accreditation Standards.
W. Attend seminars, workshops, and conferences at the direction of PCM.
X. Flexibility in work schedule is required. Unpredictable circumstances may warrant additional work hours and overnight travel to other facilities. May be required to relocate (temporarily) to meet the needs of PCM.
Y. Adhere to established PCM and facility policies and procedures.
Z. Is operationally responsible and accountable for the nursing functions of the medical unit.
AA. Recruit replacement personnel for all vacant positions.
BB. Provide other services and perform other duties as assigned by Corporate Staff and/or HSA.
This position provides a 2-week orientation period where you will be training on-the-job and shadowing with the nursing staff.

Clinical Responsibilities:
A. Maintain accurate records of all controlled substances, narcotics, and sharps in accordance with applicable state and federal laws.
B. Provide health counseling to inmates/patients.
C. Conduct sick call for inmates/patients and provide provisional and treatment for selected minor illness and injuries defined by written protocol approved by PCM Medical Director.
D. Refer all cases not covered by written protocol that do not respond to treatment to an appropriate provider.
E. Receive and give inter-shift report to ensure continuity of care and to disseminate pertinent information necessary to the functioning of the oncoming shift.
F. Observe, report, and document symptoms, reactions, and progress of inmates/patients and formulate a plan of nursing care.
G. Review, evaluate and coordinate planning for future admissions, participates in pre-release planning with other members of the facility staff.
H. Collect complete on-going data to determine nursing care needs. Monitor nursing care which promotes, maintains, and restores the well-being of inmates/patients.
I. Perform all aspects of general and specialized nursing care principles and techniques in the care and treatment of the ill inmate/patient within the facility.
J. Administer - immunizations, tuberculin testing, basic and advanced first aid, basic cardiopulmonary resuscitation, visual acuity and tele binocular examinations, and oxygen when indicated.
K. Perform twelve (12) lead electrocardiograms and assemble results for interpretation by a provider.
L. Conduct sanitation inspections in the absence of the HSA.
M. Participate in the Quality Assurance program and is a member of the QA committee.
N. Record retrieve and file medical information in the inmate/patient medical record.
O. Administer treatment prescribed by verbal or written orders from a provider.
P. Administer oral and parenteral medications prescribed by a provider.
Q. Gather clinical data from medical records to be included in various reports and QA audits. Conduct regularly scheduled QA audits.
R. Collect laboratory specimens by various methods, including venipuncture.
S. Assist providers during performance of physical examinations and physician visits.
T. Perform initial inmate/patient physical assessment (intake screening) according to established written protocol.
U. Accompany and assist provider(s) during facility rounds.
V. Assist dentist and psychiatrist as needed.
W. Assign duties to PCM nursing staff, provide instruction(s) on methods and techniques to provide care, review work in progress and collaborate with HSA.
X. Maintain confidentiality at all times.
Y. Submit copy of professional license and other credentialing information to the corporate office.
Z. Any/all other duties and responsibilities as assigned or delegated.
