Academic & Educational Counselor

Position Overview

The Academic and Education Counselor will provide professional counseling services to support the academic and formal education needs of students and staff at the Medical Education and Training Campus (METC). This role involves designing, implementing, and evaluating programs to assist students in learning, improving study habits, and achieving academic and career goals. The counselor will also provide guidance and training to METC instructors to improve the quality of academic counseling services.

Key Responsibilities

Academic and Education Counseling Services
-Provide professional academic and education counseling services to METC students and staff.
-Develop programs to assist students in learning and improving study habits.
-Address academic and learning challenges faced by students and provide solutions to improve outcomes.
-Operate and support the METC Student Learning Center and the Instructor Resources Center.
-Serve as a subject matter expert (SME) for academic counseling and learning programs.
-Offer advice and training to instructors on proper counseling techniques to facilitate student success.
-Provide education counseling to instructors pursuing continuing personal and professional education.

Program Development and Evaluation
-Design and revise courses to incorporate new concepts and technologies in academic and career counseling.
-Develop educational procedures, standards, and performance requirements for counseling programs.
-Evaluate student attrition rates and recommend corrective actions to improve retention and success.
-Screen prerequisites for component services to ensure proper academic preparation for incoming students.
-Report annually to the Instructional Delivery Department (IDD) Associate Dean on program goals, evaluations, trends, and recommended solutions.

Training and Professional Development
-Provide training programs to instructors on academic counseling and learning techniques.
-Develop innovative counseling approaches and train staff to implement them effectively.
-Offer career counseling services to staff pursuing higher education degrees and certifications.

Technology and Innovation
-Stay current with the latest techniques, technologies, and strategies related to academic counseling and learning.
-Integrate educational technology into counseling services to enhance student learning and career planning.
-Research and adopt best practices from military, civilian, and industrial educational institutions.

Collaboration and Consultation
-Consult with the Faculty, Staff, and Student Development (FSSD) supervisor on all aspects of the METC counseling program.
-Review and evaluate component service policies and procedures to align with counseling goals.
-Provide feedback and recommendations to improve the effectiveness of counseling services.

Qualifications and Skills
-Minimum 5 years of experience in academic counseling, education counseling, or related fields.
-Expertise in counseling techniques, academic advising, and learning strategies.
-Knowledge of educational technologies and curriculum development methods.
-Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
