Job Description:

Reporting to the Director of Engineering, this position will provide leadership to a team of 15 Engineers and design staff.  The team is responsible for the scoping, designs, project engineering and procurement in support of all projects. This role will appeal to individuals with strength in leading and developing Engineering professionals.

Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for managing a multidiscipline Engineering and Design team in support of projects.  
  • Provide ongoing guidance, support and direction for Engineers and design staff on project-related issues as required. 
  • Ensure Project Managers have ongoing engineering support during all phases of project execution. 
  • Report to the Director, Engineering on metrics, resourcing plans, and design issues. 
  • Assess internal resource requirements and balance workload and project assignments. 
  • Assist Director, Engineering with setting annual departmental goals and provide assistance with their implementation. 
  • Liaise with the Manager, Drafting to ensure required drafting resources are in place to support designs.
  • Performance reviews, goal setting and staff development for the team. 
  • Engineering oversight of external Engineering firms working on AltaLink projects
  • Recruitment and retention of staff.
  • Communicate and measure adherence to AML and APEGA policies and procedures. 
  • Work in a manner to ensure personal safety and that of fellow employees by following company health and safety guidelines and policies. 
  • Superior communication skills with the ability to demonstrate the behaviors associated with being a key integrator and collaborator of people and processes. 
  • Recognized leader of people and process   gains rapport and trust quickly; likable; sets people at ease; understands the support model and org culture required to make it work.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor Degree(s) in Engineering, or equivalent required. 
  • Professional Engineer with APEGA or eligible for registration as a professional engineer in APEGA. 
  • 5 or more years of management experience. 
  • 10+ years’ experience in the regulated utility industry or electrical industry. 
  • Proven ability / experience in the above noted responsibilities.   
  • Previous engineering design or related technical experience in the areas of P&C, SCADA or Telecom would be an asset. 
  • Knowledge of Capital Replacement & Upgrade programs would be an asset.
  • Ability to create and analyze project metrics (financial and non-financial). 
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple priorities.  
  • Demonstrated leadership ability and strong interpersonal skills complimented by strong verbal and written communication skills. 
  • Excellent problem solver coupled with a proven ability to lead groups involved in fast paced, high-pressure environments. 
  • Proven track record for management and development of staff.  Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment. 
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to manage a wide variety of issues simultaneously.
  • Negotiation skills and effective communication and interpersonal skills to interface with team members and customers to promote positive outcomes.
  • Proven track record of good attendance and job performance.
