Quick Take: Axios is a growth-stage company dedicated to providing trustworthy, award-winning news content in an audience-first format. We are hiring an audience editor to lead our editorial SEO efforts as part of our efforts to grow readership to axios.com nationally and locally.
Why it matters: You will be directly responsible for how our journalism is presented to search engines like Google and lead our site optimization on a day-to-day basis. You’ll shape Axios’ editorial SEO strategy, train our wider newsroom on best practices, and collaborate with the Audience team.
Go deeper: You will work as both a player and a coach to strengthen Axios’ SEO practice and ensure SEO is a part of the fabric of the larger Audience strategy. In this role, you will make an impact on Axios through the following responsibilities:
- Coordinate, edit and update stories and guides with an SEO focus in collaboration with editors
- Update editorial workflows and training to better optimize the standard optimization for stories across our newsroom
- Develop SEO strategy for tentpole news events and enterprise articles.
- Create actionable insights from SEMRush, Search Console, Google Analytics, and Looker to run experiments
- Have a finger on the pulse of news and pounce on opportunities to rank on targeted keywords in the news
- Answer reporter and editor questions on optimization best practices and keyword targeting
- Map out internal linking and headlines across topics and tags
- Analyze the performance of stories and make recommendations to the newsroom and product colleagues
- Understand the competitive news landscape and develop strategies to broaden Axios’ reach to new readers

- Familiarity with tools like SEMRush, Screaming Frog, etc.

- Interest in taxonomies and categorization practices across topics
- Passionate about journalism, news and the media industry
- Competitive with other publications and motivated by metrics
- Strong writing and editing skills as well as attention to detail
- Newsroom experience working with reporters and editors

Base salary for this role is in the range of $80,000 - $100,000 and is dependent on numerous factors, including but not limited to location, work experience, and skills. This range does not include other compensation benefits.
