Senior/Staff Electrical Engineer, Design

Atomic Machines is ushering in a new era in micromanufacturing with its Matter Compiler (MC) technology. The MC enables new classes of micromachines to be designed and built by offering manufacturing processes and a materials library that is inaccessible to semiconductor manufacturing methods. The MC promises to unlock MEMS manufacturing both for the many device classes that never could be made by semiconductor methods but also to open up entirely new classes. Furthermore, the MC is fully digital in the way 3D printing is digital, but where 3D printing produces parts of a single material using a single process, the MC is a multi-process, multi-material technology: bits and raw materials go in and complete, functional micromachines come out.  The Atomic Machines team has also created an exciting first device – one that was only made possible by the existence of the Matter Compiler – that we will be unveiling to the world soon.

Our offices are in Berkeley and Santa Clara, California.

About the Role:

We are looking for a well-rounded experienced electrical engineer that enjoys working in an agile environment. We expect our engineers to be self-motivated, willing and capable to make decisions based on incomplete information and having a get-it-done attitude.

The main line of work will be to build and integrate machine control systems for our custom manufacturing nodes. Our system is built around a multiprocessor architecture with distinct processors handling networking, general machine control and specialty controls like vision and motion. Cable routing, EMI and ESD control are also important aspects of the job.

We emphasize modularity for reuse to speed up subsequent builds of nodes with similar needs.

What You’ll Do:
  • Participate in the system architecture definition
  • Design and build custom electronics for our automated manufacturing systems
  • Integrate third party electronics
  • Support the building of engineering fixtures
  • Create and maintain component and module libraries for reuse
  • Generate manufacturing data and interact with vendors
  • Work closely with embedded systems, software and mechanical engineering teams

What You’ll Need:
  • 7-10 years of experience
  • Maker mentality
  • Schematics entry, layout and library management (Altium Designer preferred)
  • Excellent bring-up and debugging skills
  • Ability to write bring-up code for processors in C, C++
  • Motor control experience
  • Strong background in mixed signal circuit design
  • Power electronics design and bring-up experience
  • SPICE simulation knowledge
  • Soldering and test and measurement shop skills
  • Good working knowledge of signal integrity, EMI and ESD handling
  • Cable harness design
  • Good documentation habits
  • B.S. in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, or related field

Bonus Points For:
  • Industrial power distribution experience
  • High reliability design
  • FPGA skills
  • Having worked with contract manufacturers
  • Expertise in FMEA
  • Knowledge of scripting languages to write test programs
  • Knowing your way around a pick and place machine
