The role:
Content Levelers bring a wide variety of experience to the table, but they are all united by their passion for improving the lives of teachers and students, and their commitment to developing engaging, student-centered, and culturally responsive resources. Content Levelers are ultimately responsible for adapting reading levels in order to create accessible content for diverse student readers. To achieve this, content levelers will be tasked with the following:
- Adapting the reading level of original articles to create four different versions at lower reading levels, making them accessible to a wider audience
- Remaining conscientious of grade appropriate content, and consider the complexity of vocabulary, sentence structure and sentence length for each level being adapted
- May participate in projects involving the identification and assignment of instructional standards tags within Newsela articles and content standards tagging & content taxonomy projects.
- Reading and writing with close attention, monitoring original articles for any mistakes and inaccuracies

In order to be successful in this role, our Content Levelers have the following experience and abilities:
- You are a former editor, journalist and/or writer for publishing company, particularly publishers with which Newsela has a partnership
- You have experience in other EdTech, tech or media organizations
- You have experience writing and editing for diverse audiences
- You understand how to think and write empathetically and with a unified voice, including Newsela's Language
- You're familiar with Newsela products
- Your experience and/or education aligns to specific subject matter including one or more of the following:
- Science: field and/or lab research, degree in STEM
- Social Studies/ELA: degree in Literacy Education (MA/M.Ed. or PhD), English and/or Writing, History or Economics
- OR secondary degree experience in education, such as a teacher or teaching assistant in ELA, Social Studies or Science
