Federal Tax Reporter

We’re looking for a smart and curious reporter capable of digging up good stories in the important and highly competitive federal tax beat. Tax Notes, the premier publisher of news and analysis for tax professionals, is passionate about bringing transparency to tax systems and we need a journalist who is equally passionate about telling stories that will help us further our mission.

A successful candidate for this job will have professional journalism experience, examples of published articles that demonstrate an ability to find unique or compelling angles, and a drive to beat the competition on stories that could affect future policy decisions.

Our reporters:

  • Work independently to track new developments at the IRS and in Congress and generate story ideas for daily news stories, sometimes on short deadlines.
  • Write longer enterprise stories that may require significant research and data analysis to provide readers with context on important issues and/or add to public debate and understanding.
  • Establish a beat and a list of reliable sources to provide commentary, background, and tips about new developments.
  • Coordinate story ideas with editors and other reporters.
  • Cover assigned conferences, hearings, and other events or developments.
  • May use social media to engage with readers and build source networks.
  • May participate in Tax Notes podcasts to interview government officials or discuss recent events.
  • BA in English, writing, or journalism, or equivalent in experience
  • One to two years of relevant tax, business, legal, or budget reporting experience
  • Willingness to travel
  • Ability to attend in-person meetings, as needed, in the Washington, D.C.-metro area
