Controller

We're seeking an experienced accounting leader to join our Finance team as Controller. In this role, you will report to the Chief Financial Officer and serve as his right hand– directing accounting operations and providing business insight to support key business initiatives. You will be directly responsible for leading accounting operational functions, monthly close, and financial reporting while implementing processes and controls. You will build and develop a team to support our ability to deliver results under deadlines and work effectively cross-functionally in a rapidly changing environment. You will create the vision for the accounting organization and determine the optimal accounting structure to enable Everlaw to efficiently scale.

Our Finance team plays a critical role at Everlaw and serves as steward to our investors, establishes the company's long-term financial strategy and roadmap, ensures accurate financial reporting, and maintains optimal financial management to support efficient operations throughout Everlaw. Our team partners across all departments in Everlaw to appropriately allocate resources, inform key business decisions, and facilitate the execution of our operational plans.

This is a full-time exempt position based in our Oakland, California office with a hybrid work schedule: in office M/W/Th with the option to work from home Tu/Fr.

In your role, you'll...

  • Serve as the most senior level accounting resource for the company.
  • Lead the implementation of policies and controls to support rigorous financial reporting within the company.
  • Build and manage an accounting operations and financial reporting team.
  • Develop and implement accounting policies related to revenue recognition, sales tax, payroll tax, accruals, capitalization, intercompany receivables, international subsidiary operations, and more.
  • Lead the month-end close, overseeing the preparation of journal entries, reviewing reconciliations including intercompany accounts, and owning the process to settle intercompany balances.
  • Consolidate Financials including international entities
  • Lead annual audits and quarterly reviews and assist with investor due diligence and reporting requirements.
  • Manage department operations: AP, credit cards, expense reimbursement, vendor payments, payroll processing, disbursements, and compliance, controls and processes.
  • Oversee, coordinate and assist external tax professionals and auditors with local, state and federal tax filings and financial statement audits.
  • Lead accounting system improvement projects, including internal documentation and training.
  • Develop, implement, and document new policies and procedures to enhance the workflow of the department and the company.
  • Participate in other special projects and analyses as needed.

About You

  • You have a Bachelor's Degree in Accounting or Finance.
  • You have at least 15 years of related work experience.
  • You have a CPA.
  • You have a thorough understanding of GAAP, including the implementation and management of ASC 606.
  • You have a strong background in the Software (SaaS) technology industry and have supported companies in high growth modes.
  • You have deep experience with Netsuite and other accounting tools (e.g, Airbase, Bill.com, ADP).
  • You have significant hands-on process, controls, and disbursements experience.
  • You have experience working with offshore accounting and finance functions.
  • You have a high degree of analytical and problem-solving capability and leadership skills.
  • You have demonstrated success leading and developing high-performing teams.
  • You thrive in a fast-paced environment.
  • You have excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • You have experience working in a "Big 4" or regional public accounting firm.
  • You have experience working in a fast-growing startup environment.
  • You have experience in consumption based SaaS technology-based models.

Benefits

  • The expected salary range for this role is between $245,000 and $300,000. The final offered salary will be dependent upon many factors including the candidate's experience and skills. The base pay range is subject to change in the future.
