Learning and Impact (L&I) Intern

Join us in creating meaningful change for Black, Brown, and Queer youth. As the L&I Intern, you’ll play an essential role in measuring the impact of Hopelab’s work, helping us drive evidence-based strategies.


This is a part-time internship (approximately 15-20 hours per week) with the opportunity to work from anywhere in the USA. The hours can be flexible to accommodate school schedules and other commitments, however candidates will need to have some availability to attend meetings during core workweek hours. Candidates should be able to begin in early-mid March 2025 (flexible start date) and commit to 6 months.

The Position: Learning and Impact (L&I) Intern

At Hopelab, the Learning & Impact (L&I) function helps gather evidence on progress towards impact, elevate insights, and adapt our strategies accordingly. In partnership with the Director of L&I, the L&I Intern will play a project management and hands-on implementation role in the full life cycle and project management of 2025 impact measurement to harness insights into progress towards impact. The related responsibilities of the position include: project managing impact measurement timeline and efforts across multiple workstreams; reviewing and refining data collection instruments; collecting, cleaning, documenting, and analyzing data; planning and facilitating data sense-making activities for Hopelab staff, leadership, and other key stakeholders.


Key responsibilities: 



Project management - 40%
  • Work with the Director of L&I to project manage the implementation plan for collecting data for Hopelab’s impact measurement efforts.
  • Mapping out the project plan and milestones (building on previous years’ template).
  • Ensuring timely completion of milestones by coordinating across multiple departments, maintaining alignment with workstream leads.
  • Scheduling touch points with function leads and other staff to identify and help to remove any roadblocks. 
  • Creating agendas, facilitating, taking notes, and capturing action items for meetings.
  • Regularly checking in with function leads on instrument refinement, data collection progress, and troubleshooting challenges that arise.
  • Tracking progress against the implementation plan and regularly updating/adjusting it as needed.


Instrument refinement - 10%
  • Along with the Director of L&I, workstream leads, and external consultants, review and update data collection instruments (surveys and interview guides) in preparation for data collection.


Data management, analysis, and sensemaking - 30%
  • Along with the Director of L&I and workstream leads, track and support data collection and methodological documentation for HL’s impact framework. 
  • Designing and refining data flows as needed to support data collection and synthesis.
  • Clean and organize data that comes in from function leads. Check for accuracy and completion, work with function leads to fill any gaps, and ensure it is organized and consistently documented across the organization.
  • Ensure data accuracy and cohesion across impact data sources.
  • Conduct basic descriptive, summative, and thematic analyses of quantitative and qualitative data.
  • Develop data visualizations that help teams to understand the insights and potential implications (the “so what”) of their data with an eye toward using the data for decision-making or otherwise taking action on the findings.


Presentations and materials - 10%
  • Create presentations and other materials related to Hopelab’s impact data that will be used for internal sensemaking, as we as to communicate insights to Hopelab staff and other key internal and external stakeholders. 


Preferred Education, Experience, and Skills
  • A proactive and detail-oriented skill set with a passion for health equity and social impact.
  • Pursuing or have recently completed a graduate degree in a relevant field of study (e.g. Monitoring and Evaluation, Public Health, Business, Strategy, Data Analytics, etc.).
  • Experience managing large complex cross-functional projects independently and successfully with strong attention to detail and problem-solving skills.
  • Technical experience in building data-related processes (standard operating procedures) and infrastructure.
  • Familiar with conducting desk research (getting information from websites, interviewing people from analogous organizations, synthesizing and communicating results).
  • Expertise in collecting, cleaning, and analyzing data and presenting it to others in simple and compelling visualizations that help to produce actionable insights.
  • Strong communication skills, including synthesizing findings, developing presentations, and facilitating discussions with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Strong interest and affinity for working in partnership with others, building strong relationships and creating the conditions for the work of others to be completed successfully.  
  • Strong interest and affinity for health equity, technology, and the well-being of youth.
