Job Description

Primary Function of Position

Intuitive is the leader in robotic assisted surgery and robotic assisted bronchoscopy, designing and manufacturing complex systems for use with da Vinci and ION procedures. These systems are tightly integrated with digital capabilities, which enhance clinical outcomes for patients, drive hospital efficiency and optimize costs to serve.

With four main business units, Intuitive is highly customer focused, delivering a varied range of new technologies, systems and instruments / accessories into the market on a regular basis. Supporting this, the Portfolio Management Office (PMO) sits independently of the Business Units and other functions, providing specialist project, program and portfolio management expertise for the successful delivery of these New Product Development and Introduction (NPDI) projects.

The PMO is now creating a new Strategic Portfolio Management organization with a Senior Director of Strategic Portfolio Management to lead it, responsible for the analysis and optimization of the portfolio of NPDI projects, at both the Business Unit and Enterprise levels, and for creating the right conditions for governance and decision making. As Intuitive’s innovation portfolio has grown significantly, there is an opportunity to formalize portfolio management as a discipline to ensure that we maximize return on investment and optimize resource utilization across the enterprise. 

Essential Job Duties

General:

  • The Senior Director of Strategic Portfolio Management will have the opportunity to stand up this new organization, providing clear vision, leadership, and experience to establish this new capability
  • Creates an environment in which deep strategic analysis and clarity of thought is valued, along with the desire to optimize the effectiveness and efficiency of our portfolios, critical new product delivery processes and supporting systems.
  • Attracts and retains the best talent to create high performing teams, building engagement and the desire to excel and deliver results, often against demanding timelines.

Portfolio Management:

  • Owns the standard approach for managing the enterprise and business unit’s portfolio along with the metrics and analytics supporting executive portfolio decisions and project execution.
  • Builds strong working relationships with the peer group of Senior Directors in the PMO, BU leadership and Commercial / Executive leaders across the enterprise. Implements portfolio management best practices, analysis and other decision support tools, to achieve long term business objectives.
  • Leads the enterprise portfolio management process, aligned with the annual operating plan, driving bi-annual reviews to drive priorities, investments, resource utilization, and necessary trade-offs.

Strategic Analysis:

  • Leads small team of Strategic Analysts to provide financial analysis, value creation, risk analysis, and resource modelling, creating insights to be used by the Business Units, Commercial Leadership team and at an enterprise level.
  • Works closely with other functions like Finance and Product Management to understand the strategy, key issues and to identify the right insights that will guide good decision making.
  • Partners with Corporate Strategy and Finance to support the Long-Range Model (8 years).

Global Launch Optimization:

  • Oversees a team to ensure that global launches, across all Business Units and Global Regions, are optimized for workload, launch impact and customer experience.
  • Builds strong working relationships with Business Unit leadership, Product Management, Commercial leaders, Regulatory, Service, and Supply Chain to balance interests and support launch optimization by identifying required changes to individual project launch plans that will create better portfolio outcomes across the business.
  • Ensuring launch readiness process is optimized to support market expansion in an effective and efficient manner.

Frameworks and Training:

  • Owns the business frameworks for the development, delivery and obsolescence of products, supporting best practices, training, and their continuous improvements.
  • Oversees training for the program management discipline (in conjunction with PMO Center of Excellence), as well as new product development processes for the organization.
  • Provides independent project assurance to support successful project completion, learn lessons, identify new best practices and drive continuous improvement.

Systems and Analytics:

  • Oversees the Systems & Analytics team, ensuring that our key systems (e.g. Polarion, Clarity PPM etc.) are effective and efficient to support portfolio and project execution.
  • Ensures availability and accuracy of data analytics and reporting capabilities to provide insights for decision-making. Facilitate the development of dashboards, KPIs, and performance reports that support portfolio management and project execution.
  • Budgets and plans upgrade roadmaps for systems and tools to maintain/enhance business capability.

Qualifications

Required Skills and Experience

  • Minimum of 15 years of program and portfolio management experience in medical device industry and/or non-medical devices operating in highly regulated industry.
  • Minimum 8 years of leadership experience (direct team management experience) and ability to influence senior leadership.
  • Experience of successfully standing up portfolio management office – including frameworks, tools, organization structure, metrics, and benefit realization
  • Strong track record in strategic analysis supporting portfolio design and optimization through all the phases of new product development lifecycle.
  • Able to work in matrix organization and lead without direct authority. Able to develop strong relationships, influence stakeholders, lead change, and drive alignment.
  • Strong people management skills with ability to ensure team success. Seasoned in coaching and developing team members.
  • Excellent communication (written, verbal) skills and executive presence.

Required Education and Training

  • Minimum Bachelor's degree required. MS or MBA, preferred.

Preferred Skills and Experience

  • Project Management Professional (PMP) certification
  • Portfolio Management certification

We provide market-competitive compensation packages, inclusive of base pay, incentives, benefits, and equity. It would not be typical for someone to be hired at the top end of range for the role, as actual pay will be determined based on several factors, including experience, skills, and qualifications.
