Responsible for maintaining insect stocks, organizing the sending and receiving of orders, performing lab-maintenance tasks, carrying out molecular biological research, contributing to the creation of published scientific works and training new lab members on policies and procedures. 1. Maintain insect cultures
  • Prepare food for Drosophila Flies in culture
  • Move flies to new food every two weeks, or as needed
  • Monitor the health and wellbeing of fly lines and work with the PI to identify and implement treatment
  • Establish new fly lines without Wolbachia bacteria through tetracycline treatment followed by molecular characterization of infection state
  • Clean insect incubators on a monthly basis
  • Perform stock-wide Wolbachia-infection assessments once yearly by performing PCR and gel electrophoresis to amplify and visualize Wolbachia genomic regions
  • Maintain a detailed inventory of insect cultures
2. Purchase, install and maintain lab supplies and equipment
  • Receive and process orders for equipment, reagents, and consumables from lab members
  • Monitor resource availability and order supplies before resources are depleted
  • Acquire quotes and seek preferred pricing from sales vendors/representatives
  • Maintain accurate and detailed spending records
  • Maintain an accurate and detailed record of the lab’s available equipment and supply funds
  • Coordinate incoming and outgoing mailing of packages via USPS, FedEx, UPS, etc.
3. Perform routine tasks in the lab to keep it safe, organized and equipped
  • Become trained in Lehigh's laboratory safety practices and other applicable policies
  • Perform weekly/monthly inspections of laboratory safety equipment
  • Monitor organization of the lab’s cold storage to confirm adherence of the lab’s sample inventory policy
  • Report activities deviating from laboratory or University policy to the PI
  • Maintain the laboratory's computers, software, and files by performing routing file organization, software updates, data backups, etc.
  • Clean and sterilize glassware and other supplies and equipment
  • Help keep laboratory and shared research spaces clean and organized
  • Oversee and ensure availability of prepared solutions including 70% ethanol for sterilization, buffers for electrophoresis and other protocols and propionic acid for insect culture
4. Carry out molecular biology research protocols and projects
  • Work with PI to identify research directions
  • Collect publication-quality data from experiments with proper controls
  • Assist graduate students and postdocs with experiments, upon PI’s approval
  • Read and understand primary literature related to the lab’s work
  • Maintain a detailed digital laboratory notebook and protocols
5. Co-author publications
  • Analyze and visualize data using routine methods
  • Write draft manuscript text associated with the data personally collected
  • Participate in the editing and review of manuscripts
6. Train new lab members in experimental and routing protocols and lab policies
  • Oversee the daily adherence to lab and University policy
  • Help implement policies put into place by the PI and/or others at the institution
  • Oversee and mentor undergraduate students assisting with lab maintenance tasks
  • Other duties, as assigned

Position Number: S71410

Grade: 8-37.5; $42,650 - $51,190

This is an approximate range and is subject to change based on experience, skills and qualifications.

The duties of the position do not allow for a remote work option; the employee in this position will be required to work on campus where they can be fully accessible to the Lehigh community

This position is funded by soft dollars; there is no severance associated with this position

Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Genetics, Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Cellular Biology, a related field or the equivalent combination of education and experience

One to three years related work experience

Positive attitude, detail and customer oriented

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills

Excellent organizational skills, time management and sound judgment

Solid computer skills with experience using word processing, spreadsheet and database software

Successful completion of standard background checks including but not limited to: social security verification, education verification, national criminal background checks, motor vehicle checks, PATCH, FBI fingerprinting, Child Abuse Clearance and credit history based upon the requirements of the position
