Director of Product Design

This is Design at Lattice

Lattice is looking for a Director of Product Design to lead an impactful, growth-oriented team of Designers as we cement our position as a category leader. You will be responsible for owning the design strategy for our team that’s responsible for Lattice’s entire Talent suite — helping us deliver connected, cohesive, and coherent experiences. Some of the sub-teams and work-streams focus on a whole host of products, from Performance Reviews to Engagement surveys to Compensation tooling and Manager experiences.

In this role, you will help us reimagine the experience of enterprise software and build valuable experiences that enable thousands of companies, including ours, to engage, retain and develop their employees. If you see the potential of how delightful people management tools can transform a business, this role is for you:

  • As a manager, you will be responsible for helping to evolve the Product Design team, its culture, and its operations. You’ll also be expected to support, coach, and help grow the team’s members into the next generation of design leadership at Lattice.
  • As a design leader, you will be responsible for partnering with Research, Data Science, Engineering, and Customer Experience to establish a multi-year vision and strategy for your portfolio of surface areas that result in end-user experiences that redefine people success practices. You’ll also be expected to set new levels of excellence for craft and execution, and chart a course for your team to get there.
  • As a senior member of EPD, you will be expected to partner with leadership across our organization to ensure we are developing our platform on common primitives with high degrees of product interoperability.
  • This role is excellent for leaders who excel at strategy/storytelling, relationship building, cross-team/org collaboration, and systems-thinking. This role will report to our Head of Product Design.

Who you are

You have 7+ years of progressive experience in Product Design, including 4+ years experience managing Designers, as well as:

  • A very high craft bar, with a portfolio to prove it. You collaborate closely with designers on your team to help them elevate the user experience through visual design, novel interaction patterns, and animation that is both delightful and functional.
  • Experience going deep on multiple complex product areas at once. Lattice’s products, while having some overlaps, can vary greatly in terms of their purpose, functionality, and even users.
  • The ability to give design feedback even when you do not have deep product knowledge. At Lattice, we expect Design Directors to attend critiques with designers who aren’t on their direct teams and to provide meaningful feedback and direction in those critiques.
  • High energy around shaping and evolving design and product development culture, in collaboration with fellow design management and the rest of the design team. Whether that’s shaping how Design and Engineering work together, updating the Design roles documentation, or reworking a crit structure that’s no longer achieving its goals, you are able to identify, get buy-in, and take action on things that will improve our culture.
  • Examples of taking accountability for all the products and design work you oversee. You do not pass the buck when something goes wrong - rather, you engage deeply and collaborate with your team and partners to find resolution and communicate effectively throughout.
  • A history of partnering successfully with associated practices, including, User Research, UX Writing, Brand Design, and Design Systems.

You have experience establishing a vision and strategy that help to shape the future of the business, including:

  • The ability to communicate design's potential impact on business outcomes.
  • Deep partnership with Research to identify UX opportunities, then work cross-functionally to influence strategy at the product and platform level.
  • Mastery in solving unstructured problems that have many dependencies and may have lengthy timelines. You are comfortable with ambiguity, autonomy, and responsibility; you enjoy figuring out what needs to be done—and then doing it.
  • The ability to define and communicate clear expectations for excellence, then chart a course at the product and platform level.
  • Preferably, experience with multi-product, B2B SaaS applications.

You’re a great communicator, collaborator, and facilitator, who:

  • Is a compelling and confident storyteller.
  • Has outstanding written and verbal communication skills with a talent for succinctly articulating customer challenges and enumerating tradeoffs.
  • Effectively organizes and lead discussions/rituals that build relationships, facilitate better collaboration, and ultimately improve the product and team culture.
