Role summary

As a Staff Engineer, you'll be at the forefront of revolutionizing our products, crafting experiences that captivate and delight users. Your role is pivotal in designing, developing, and maintaining top-tier software that not only meets but exceeds user expectations. What you will do

• Craft and Innovate: Be a key contributor to the design and implementation of new features, working closely with other engineers to bring cutting-edge ideas to life.

• Cross-Functional Synergy: Collaborate with product managers, designers, and fellow engineers to define and implement solutions that push the boundaries of what's possible.

• Performance Excellence: Ensure our products are high-performing, reliable, and responsive, delivering a seamless user experience.

• Code Quality Champion: Uphold the highest standards of code quality through rigorous reviews, unit testing, and automation.

• Thought Leader: Stay at the forefront of software development trends and technologies, continuously enhancing your skills and knowledge.

• Mentor and Guide: Foster the growth of other engineers, sharing your expertise and contributing to a culture of learning and development.

• End-to-End Ownership: Participate in the full software development lifecycle, from conceptualization to deployment, ensuring our products exceed user expectations.

A Staff Engineer at Mistral spends 80% coding and 20% : 

• Owning engineering projects end to end (from architecture design to delivery)

• Advocating cross-domain topics (Architecture, code quality, testing, performance, documentation...)

• Coaching and mentoring other engineers

• Possibly Interacting with Product Managers

About the teams

The idea would be to explore together your stack and experiences to find the best role but these are potential teams & projects where you could start your work :

• Le Chat core - Web platform

• Le Chat apps - Desktop (not yet started) - Ideal if you have experience with Electron or Tauri

• Mistral Code - Connecting Codestral, our coding model, to your IDE (not yet released)

Who you are 

• Significant expertise in web development using Typescript, React.js and Node.js, with a preference for experience in B2C contexts.

• If applying for our Desktop team, knowledge of Electron or Tauri is required 

• Deep consumer and UX/UI sense. 

• Architectural skills (scooping, scalability, reliability & maintainability)

• Cross-domain spike (Performance, Security…).

• Proven capacity to mentor. coach, train other engineers. 

• Proven experience in a similar Staff role, with a preference for previous startup or fast-paced/demanding environments.

• Excellent communication. 

• Autonomous and self-starter profile.

• Low Ego and team spirit mindset

• Problem-solving and decision-making skills.

Remote 

For this role, we do not require you to be based in a specific location outside of the countries listed in this job posting. In return, we expect you to be available for a monthly visit to one of our offices. 

If you are based in France 🇫🇷, Germany 🇩🇪, or Spain 🇪🇸, we ask that you be able to come to our Paris office for 3 days each month. 

If you are based in the UK 🇬🇧, we ask that you be able to come to our London office for 3 days each month. 

Mistral AI will cover 100% of inter-country travel expenses and 50% of intra-country travel expenses.

We require all new hires to come to Paris for the first month when they start.
