Career Education Specialist

JOB SUMMARY

Under supervision of the CCEOP Manager, the Career Education Specialist will develop and design a professional development and education program to support CCEOP Youth Participants career goals.

MAJOR TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Interviews, Advises, and guides CCEOP Youth Participants to develop an education/career plan for each individual Participant.
  • Monitors and evaluates youth’s progress through program components.
  • Monitors worksite providers through reports and site visits.
  • Resolves any problems or provides guidance and counseling.
  • May make phone calls or conduct field visits to investigates clients progress in various programs designed to assist clients in preparing for and obtaining employment.
  • Contacts internal and external employers in order to develop on-the-job training and/or direct job placement sites for CCEOP Participants.
  • Maintains cooperative relationships with employers, academic and vocational training institutions, and support service and community resource agencies.
  • Identifies appropriate job placement/training opportunities for CCEOP youth participants.
  • Maintains an awareness of local job market and opportunities to assist in providing guidance to youth.
  • May arrange for employee interviews, attend job fairs, conduct special workshops, Presentations, group orientations, or perform other training and outreach activities.
  • Teach/Organize job search workshops facilitating skills labs and provide career counseling to youth in the CCEOP Program.
  • Conducts student trainings for personal and professional developments.
  • Develop, coordinate, facilitate, and/or present academic planning and career development modules and special workshops (e.g. choosing a major, resume development, identifying internship opportunities, etc.).
  • Develop outreach programs to promote career advisement services among students
  • Organize youth conferences and trips.
  • Assists with staring of the MIT Youth Council.
  • Respond to student questions pertaining to career development, exploration and placement procedures.
  • Maintain regular contact with employers for new job opportunities.
  • Develop new employers through cold calling, mailing and visits.
  • Does not officially supervise other employee’s (sign performance reviews).
  • Evaluates and signs performance reviews (as the supervisor) of other employee’s excluding peer review performance evaluation.
  • Provides work direction to one or more employee’s.
  • Instructs other employee’s in methods or procedures needed to carry out their job.
  • Determine the job duties of others in the work unit.
  • Recommends termination for poor performance.
  • Provides recommendations on grievance decisions.
  • Because of the Tribe’s commitment to community service and the well being of its members, each employee may be expected to perform a wide range of office and field duties from time to time. Such duties may or may not be related to their regular responsibilities.
  • EDUCATION - EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING FOR POSITION

    Required:

    • Bachelor’s Degree in degree in Behavioral Sciences or a closely related field. Such as sociology, counseling, social work, psychology, vocational guidance.
    • Two (2) years’ experience in teaching, advising, career coaching, and/or counseling.

    Preferred:

    • Currant and Valid WA State Teaching Certificate.

    SPECIFIC SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE/ABILITIES REQUIRED FOR POSITION

    Knowledge of:

    • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills.
    • Experience working with a diverse student population and specific school demographics.
    • Knowledge of current approaches to teaching.
    • Familiar working in Native American communities.

    Skilled in:

    • Enthusiam.
    • Possess strong management skill and the ability to develop and implement programs based on individual student needs, establish goals, and plan in-service and activities to meet those stated goals.
    • Excellent problem resolution skills.
    • Excellent communication skills, oral and written.
    • Resourceful and innovative in finding useful information.
    • Above average user skills in computer and information technology (e.g. student database, social media, online educational resources).

    Ability to:

    • Be willing to work on his/her own initiative with little supervision.
    • Flexibility.
    • Ability to organize ideas, time and materials to accomplish goals.
    • Ability to learn new ideas and skills.
    • Ability and willingness to develop favorable relationships with students.
    • Ability to establish rapport with staff, students, community, and create strong partnerships and programs.

    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

    The employee is frequently required to sit, stand, talk, and hear. The employee is occasionally required to walk, crouch, bend at the waist, reach with hands and arms, and use hands to grasp, finger, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls.  The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 20 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision and the ability to adjust focus.  The noise level in the work environment is usually moderately quiet.
