What’s your Role

To dream big and deliver boldly.

You'll drive the technology vision behind our journalism, storytelling, and customer experiences, enabling award-winning content through innovation in AI, subscriptions, advertising, and editorial tools.

This role is specifically focused on developing the technology strategy, shaping our organisation and championing the safe, efficient and innovative delivery across our publishing assets. Your leadership will span the full Publishing portfolio from our fleet of market leading mobile apps; Good Food, AFR and SMH and The Age to the website millions of Aussies check everyday; nine.com.au. 

This unique role shapes the day to day experience of Nine’s award winning journalists as they use our products to write, edit, curate, track and distribute their stories to the nation.

You’ll partner closely with our Director of Product to lead a high-performing cross-functional team, fostering a culture of innovation, performance, and customer obsession. You'll balance visionary thinking with hands-on leadership, driving continuous improvement across our platforms.

What you will lead:

  • Craft and champion the technology strategy for Nine’s publishing portfolio

  • Lead world-class teams across engineering, platforms, and AI

  • Elevate our products through smart, customer-led innovation

  • Build strong partnerships with editorial, product, and executive teams

  • Deliver continuous improvement in resilience, scalability, and performance

  • Keep us ahead of the curve in subscriptions, payments, and digital advertising

  • Deliver, own, manage and report on all technology related KPIs and budgets to assess technology delivery and performance

  • Implement agile at scale development methodologies to foster flexibility, adaptability, and responsiveness to market changes

  • Provide recommendations and present business advantages for technology initiatives and improvements in particular: advances in subscription & payments technology, mobile app development, use of AI for content production. 

  • Build and lead teams that oversee all aspects of technology delivery, outlining the development and implementation of roadmap and delivery plans for product development, launch, and ongoing enhancements 

  • Ensure Nine’s products have the necessary resiliency and scalability to meet the 24/7 needs of our customers 

  • Continue to drive the market leadership position of the AFR, our mastheads and any other product in the publishing portfolio through continuous product improvement, platform efficiency and user experience.

  • Ensure systems are in place to monitor Technology performance and outputs with a view to proactively identify and mitigate system risks.

  • Together with the Director of Product of the portfolio, oversee relationships with external vendors and partners.

Qualifications

What you will bring:

  • Undergraduate degree (preferably in relevant technical field e.g., computer science, engineering) 

  • 10+ years in technology leadership with large-scale teams

  • Deep understanding of modern technology: AI, cloud, product development, agile delivery.

  • Proven success leading large, complex engineering teams and technology transformation

  • Deep expertise in cloud, data, AI, agile delivery, and software development

  • Demonstrated experience leading large scale technology teams delivering consumer or commercial products to market, on time and budget, with quantifiable improvements to productivity over time.

  • A deep understanding of current and emerging technologies. This includes knowledge of product management, software development, cloud computing, data analytics, cybersecurity, and other relevant areas.

  • Experience with implementation and ongoing management of various delivery options such as agile at scale, outsourced of offshored engineering models.

  • Strong commercial instincts and strategic thinking

  • The ability to inspire, challenge, and grow senior teams

  • A natural passion for media and the power of storytelling
