The Role


The Privacy and Civil Liberties (PCL) Engineering team is a mission-driven interdisciplinary team of Software Engineers, Data Scientists, Lawyers, and Applied Ethicists. The goal of the PCL team is to design, build, and deploy privacy-protective technologies and to foster a culture of responsibility around their development and use. Our team has deep expertise in privacy law and technology ethics, and PCL engineers translate legal and ethical requirements into software solutions.


As a Software Engineer on the PCL team, you will be responsible for designing and developing full-stack software products for privacy, data protection, and Responsible AI (AI explainability, fairness, transparency, testing & evaluation, etc.) across Palantir’s software platforms, including Foundry, Gotham, and AIP. The software that you build will directly help our customers, across industries and geographies, better meet their regulatory and ethical obligations. As part of this role, you will collaborate with technical and non-technical teammates to understand our customer’s problems as well as the latest trends in policy and regulation in order to build practical solutions for privacy and Responsible AI challenges.

Core Responsibilities
  • Architect, develop, and maintain high-performance, scalable backend services that underpin critical workflows for governance, privacy, and security.
  • Build new greenfield solutions for emerging challenges in privacy and Responsible AI and iterate with customers in the field to refine these solutions based on real-world feedback.
  • Design and develop interactive workflow user-interfaces to make technical concepts accessible to users from a variety of backgrounds.
  • Maintain high coding standards by actively participating in code reviews and fostering a culture of continuous improvement and knowledge sharing among your team.
  • Actively improve user workflows by collaborating with cross-functional teams, ensuring seamless experiences across product boundaries and a cohesive user experience.
  • Work closely with other Palantir engineers and customers to advise on best practices for privacy, data governance, and Responsible AI in Palantir software platforms.


Technologies We Use:
  • Typescript, React, and GQL for our frontend development
  • Different backend languages, including Java and Python
  • Distributed systems technologies such as Cassandra, Elasticsearch and Spark
  • Industry-standard build tooling, including Gradle, GitHub, and CircleCI

  • Experience and curiosity in any of the following domains is a plus: privacy, data protection, AI testing & evaluation, AI fairness/bias, technology ethics.


What We Require
  • 2+ years of frontend and backend software engineering experience.
  • Engineering background in Computer Science, Mathematics, Software Engineering, Physics or similar field.
  • Experience in designing and developing features and improvements, as well as supporting and maintaining live backend systems.
  • In-depth understanding of data structures, system architecture, API development for microservices frameworks and programming languages such as Java, Python, or similar languages.
  • Familiarity with frontend frameworks, web technologies, and programming languages such as JavaScript/Typescript, or similar languages.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.


Salary


The estimated salary range for this position is estimated to be $135,000 - $200,000/year. Total compensation for this position may also include Restricted Stock units, sign-on bonus and other potential future incentives. Further note that total compensation for this position will be determined by each individual’s relevant qualifications, work experience, skills, and other factors. This estimate excludes the value of any potential sign-on bonus; the value of any benefits offered; and the potential future value of any long-term incentives.
