Managed Care Collections Supervisor - Los Angeles

Planned Parenthood Los Angeles is seeking an experienced Managed Care Collections Supervisor to work at our Downtown LA Headquarters office. Under the general supervision of the Sr. Director, of Revenue Cycle & Insurance Verification, the Managed Care Collections Supervisor manages the Medi-HMO collections Team in the Centralized Billing Office (CBO). Major functions include overseeing day-to day operations of assigned Billing Office team, serving as the first point of contact for staff and also serves as the liaison with the Director of Revenue Cycle regarding operational processes and issues.

All employees of PPLA are defined as Healthcare Workers by current Public Health Orders and are required to receive the seasonal influenza immunization and updated COVID-19 immunization (2024-2025 formula) OR wear a respiratory mask when in contact with patients or working in patient care areas.


Our Ideal Candidate will have the following qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience required.
  • Five (5) years’ experience as a Medical Biller/Encounter Representative.
  • Three (3) years of collection and receivable experience.
  • Minimum one (1) year experience in supervisory position required 
  • Complete understanding of medical billing – coding, documentation, electronic claim filing, payment posting, accounts receivable.
  • Knowledge with various payors – Family PACT, Medi-CAL, HMOs, IPAs, PPOs, POS, EPO, Medicare, etc.
  • Ability to work independently and as a team member.
  • Ability to prioritize and manage numerous projects simultaneously. 
  • Self-motivated, with ability to work with little direct supervision. 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills. 
  • Accuracy and attention to detail essential. 
  • Professional appearance and attitude. 
  • Availability to work flexible hours, including weekends and evenings as required. 
  • Ability and willingness to travel within Los Angeles County.
  • Reliable means of transportation for onsite and off-site work.
  • If using a personal vehicle to drive for work purposes, a valid CA driver license and current auto insurance in compliance with the minimum requirements of CA vehicle code are required


About the position:
  • Abortion patients are cared for at each of our health centers, and in part through the administrative, support, and other non-clinical services provided at all PPLA locations, and by all PPLA employees. Supporting these critical services is an essential job duty, and a fundamental responsibility of all employees and contractors.
  • Oversee training and serve as a resource for all Billing Office staff, to ensure maximal efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Provide guidance to staff regarding reviews, troubleshooting, and resolving complex account problems.
  • Complete Quality Reviews (QR) for staff as directed by Manager, perform daily Continuous Quality Improvement reviews to provide insight into trends and timely feedback to staff and Senior Director of Revenue Cycle and Insurance Verification.
  • Identify and implemented solutions to the operational areas, where there are difficulties and/or processing problems.
  • Manage the development and implementation of Departmental policies for the team.
  • the billing responsibilities of other CBO staff.
  • Attend and participate in billing related training sessions.
  • Work in conjunction with other Leads/Manager to coordinate job functions when staff are out.
  • Understand the functions of company and department computer programs as well as ancillary products and workflows as they are rolled out to the department and PPLA as a whole.
  • Review and discuss unit performance and upcoming initiatives in weekly meeting with Sr. Director of Revenue Cycle and Insurance Verification.  Discussion should outline initiatives and priorities for the entire week.
  • Work directly with the Sr. Director of Revenue Cycle and Insurance Verification on projects as assigned.
  • Collaborate in Health Center/affiliate efforts to achieve established revenue cycle goals.
  • Oversee the team’s follow-up and collections of outstanding accounts more than 45 days from date of submission.
  • Manage the team’s follow ups on zero paid line items and correspondence received daily – resolving the claim by either resubmitting the claim with corrected information or identify the appropriate adjustment code to write off the open charge line.
  • Document all follow-up findings and resubmission efforts in the patient’s EPM account.
  • Audit and review adjustments / write off request to ensure proper documentation and guidelines in the Billing section of the Finance Department policies and procedure manual.
  • Identify patterns and trends from payers and implement recommendations for improvement or actions to improve PPLA position in maximizing revenue. 
  • Hiring Range: $65,000 - 78,000 annually (Exempt)
