The New Yorker is seeking a social-media manager to help maintain and expand the magazine’s presence across social-media platforms. As part of the social-media team, the manager works across the organization to translate The New Yorker’s short-form, long-form, and multimedia reporting to social networks, keeping in mind that these venues mark many visitors’ principal encounter with the brand. As such, the social-media manager must possess excellent writing and editing skills, strong organizational and communication skills, a passion for social media, and a deep interest in the stories and issues regularly covered by The New Yorker. This is a Guild position.
Responsibilities include:
  • Assisting with writing, editing, and posting content from the magazine, Web site, events, and brand extensions (e.g. “The New Yorker Radio Hour”) across social-media and mobile-first platforms.
  • Identifying news pegs and opportunities to repromote archival stories, cartoons, and covers.
  • Helping with other aspects of The New Yorker's digital-distribution strategy, including push notifications.
  • Pitching and producing social-first series that will elevate and expand the brand on social media.
  • Overseeing community management and engagement on all social platforms.
  • Assisting with compiling monthly analytics reports to measure content performance.
  • Collaborating with the audience-development and data-analytics teams to maximize stories’ reach and insure the brand is meeting site-wide growth goals.
  • Insuring that The New Yorker is an early innovator on emerging platforms and abreast of the latest social-media trends.
  • Supporting the team with planning and project management for live events, including the annual New Yorker Festival, and other team initiatives.
  • Additional duties as assigned by the direct manager.
Candidates must have/be:
  • Three to five years of experience in a social-media or journalism role.
  • Familiarity with and interest in the history, style, and voice of The New Yorker.
  • Deep understanding of the media landscape and a strong news sense.
  • Knowledge of, passion for, and experience with social-media platforms, both established and emerging.
  • A demonstrated ability to write engaging social-media copy across a range of topics, and for a variety of audiences.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects at once and work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Experience with analytics and listening tools.
  • Familiarity with design programs used to create social-media assets, such as Figma and the Adobe Creative Suite.
  • Meticulous attention to detail and strong organizational and communication skills.
  • Ambitious, proactive, and a quick learner.
  • Familiarity with video production tools and processes a plus.
Base Pay Range: $70,000 - $110,000
