Principal Product Manager, Utility Products & Grid Services

The Role

SPAN is hiring a Principal Product Manager, Utility Products & Grid Services reporting to the VP of Product to lead and scale our utility and grid services product offering. SPAN Panels are on the path to becoming a critical part of the electrical grid infrastructure through sensing, control, and orchestration of power and energy at the grid edge, offering cost effective non-wires alternatives to traditional service upgrades and distribution upgrades. We are looking for a product leader and visionary who brings deep utility, distribution planning, software platform, and machine learning experience to accelerate SPAN’s execution and impact to electrifying and decarbonizing our grid.

In this role, you will develop and refine the product vision and strategy, create the roadmap, and drive execution from requirements to launch and iteration working cross-functionally within SPAN and with our utility partners. You will be both a hands on product manager as well as a leader amongst the product team equally comfortable presenting to partner and utility executives as you are to grooming a backlog with engineering. You will create a vision to rally the team behind, establish innovative feature sets informed by a deep understanding of the distribution grid, your own modeling, customer research, and partner conversations. You are known for your bias for action, ability to get things done while navigating ambiguity and excellent judgement. You will be a leader amongst the product org and be expected to demonstrate and teach product best practices, amplifying your impact by building scalable product mechanisms, instilling product culture, and mentoring others. You are confident technically and not afraid to challenge system architectural decisions, algorithm approaches, or dive deep into the technical trade-offs. You earn trust by asking the right questions, rolling up your sleeves to do the work, bringing diverse perspectives, and most importantly delivering for our customers, the grid, and our mission!

This position is a unique opportunity to join on the ground floor of one of the most strategic product initiatives across SPAN.

About You

Required Qualifications 

  • Deep utility, grid, and distribution experience, especially building products software and/or IoT products for utilities or utility adjacent products (Grid Planning, VPP, DERMs, DERs)

  • 10+ years of product management experience; 5+ years in technical product management in relevant domains

  • Demonstrated ability to conceptualize, develop, and launch “V1” products or services, then iterate, optimize and scale them quickly

  • Demonstrated success building machine learning, AI, and data driven products both cloud and on-device

  • Demonstrated success building API’s and cloud based platforms

  • Familiarity with distributed energy resource (DER) control standards (OpenADR, IEEE 2030.5, CTA 2045, etc.)

  • Proven track record of managing and executing complex products from start to finish, including project management, data gathering, identifying and mitigating development and implementation risks, problem-solving, and communicating recommendations

  • Experience working directly with partner and utility executives as well as driving outcomes from technical counterparts

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, a strong sense of ownership, urgency and drive

  • Exceptional analytical capabilities with a focus on distribution modeling and ability to translate that to product requirements and algorithm requirements

  • Inspirational leadership skills and entrepreneurial spirit

  • BA/BS degree in Computer Science, Business, Engineering, or a similar discipline

  • Demonstrated success in building a culture of rapid experimentation, learning, and innovation

  • Demonstrated expertise in front-end and mobile technologies including software for end customers and grid operators

  • Experience with launching new technology products/services to consumers OR energy market segment participants

  • Experience working with home energy products (solar, battery, EVSE, HVAC) and demonstrated understanding of clean energy industry

  • In-depth experience and understanding of the energy segment and regulatory structural aspects in the US

  • Experience building products in the networking, sensors, and IoT space
