Title- Willapa Bay Juvenile Fish MonitoringClassification- Scientific Technician 2 (ST2)Job Status- Full-Time/PermanentWDFW Program- Science Program – Ecology Life Cycle Monitoring (ELC) UnitDuty Station- Olympia, Washington – Thurston CountyLearn more about being a member of Team WDFW!Photo Caption – Coho Salmon Photo Credit – Bureau of Land ManagementThis opportunity provides valuable hands-on experience in fisheries, where you will collect data to assess population estimates, productivity, and the diversity of natural-origin salmonids in the Willapa Basin.Picture yourself in the field, actively involved in operating juvenile and adult fish traps and conducting spawning ground surveys to support conservation efforts.What to Expect-Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Willapa Bay Juvenile Fish Monitoring will,• Assist with the installation/removal, operation and maintenance of juvenile fish traps, including a juvenile Chum weir and juvenile 5’ rotary screw trap.• Check traps daily, counting and sub-sampling adult/juvenile salmonid catch.• Collect and record related biological and environmental data.• Use various marking and tagging techniques.• Maintain trap integrity during high flow events and make repairs if damage occurs due to weather, flows, debris, or vandalism.• Organize and maintain all trap related gear, sampling equipment and data forms.• Assist in weekly spawning ground surveys and carcass collection studies.• Work adult weir.• Organize and accurately enter data into agency databases.Working Conditions:Work Setting, including hazards:• Primarily working outdoors (85%), under potentially inclement weather conditions.• Repetitively lift full nets of live fish, with or without assistance, weighing 40lbs or more, but rarely over 100 lbs.• Regularly transport five (5) gallon buckets of water in slippery conditions on uneven terrain. Walk up to ten (10) miles a day in areas of swift and deep water and uneven, slippery terrain.• Navigate on gravel logging roads with a 4x4 truck.• Handle live and dead fish, to collect biological samples. Exposure of hands to cold water.• Use MS-222 to anesthetize fish.• Office work (15%) may consist of working from home or in an office setting verifying and entering data.• May operate non-motorized watercraft in swift waters and motorized watercraft to get to and from smolt trap.• Must be able to negotiate water in emergency situations.Schedule: 40 hours per week, 24/7 non-scheduled. May include weekends, holidays and overtime as needed.Travel Requirements: Daily travel to and from field locations.Tools and Equipment: Laptops, motorized and non-motorized watercrafts, 4x4 trucks, water pumps, chain saws, power tools, hand tools, filet knives, scissors, scalpels, coded wire tagging (CWTs), passive integrated transponder (PIT) tagging equipment, visible implant elastomer (VIE) tagging equipment, Microject and bismark brown tagging equipment, and other sampling equipment.Customer Interactions: Work will be conducted alongside fellow technicians. Interactions with the public can be common. Less common interactions are with personnel from private companies, tribes, federal, state, and local agencies.Qualifications:Required Qualifications:Graduation from high school or GED, including one (1) year of high school science AND two (2) years of experience as a Scientific Technician 1.ORGraduation from high school or GED including one (1) year of high school science AND two (2) years of laboratory or field experience as an assistant to a biologist, chemist, or zoologist.Please Note:• College course work involving major study in biology, zoology, fisheries, chemistry, natural sciences, or closely allied field will substitute, year for year, for experience, provided the course work includes at least six (6) semester or nine (9) quarter hours of natural science classes.• Professional and volunteer experience involving biology, zoology, fisheries, chemistry, natural resources, engineering, or closely allied fields may substitute, year for year, for experience.Certifications/Licenses:Valid Driver’s License.Preferred Qualifications:In addition to the required qualifications, our ideal applicant will possess some or all the following:Ability to:• Identify juvenile and adult salmonids by species.• Enter data into computer files and spreadsheets using software such as Microsoft Excel and Access.• Effectively coordinate and communicate with co-workers and other fisheries professionals.Working knowledge of:• Salmon life history and proper fish-handling techniques.• Spawning ground survey techniques and carcass sampling techniques.• Juvenile and adult salmon trapping techniques.• Fish marking and tagging protocols.• Coded-Wire Tag (CWT) injector and detection equipment and Passive Integrated Transponder (PIT) tagging equipment.• Basic construction and use of hand & power tools.Your application should include the following:• A completed online application.• An up-to-date resume (chronological preferred) showcasing how your qualifications align with the job requirements.• A cover letter detailing your interest in the position, your relevant skills and experience, and why you are the ideal candidate.• At least three professional references with current contact information.In addition to pay and other special employee programs, there are other benefits that WDFW employees may be eligible for.
