General Counsel

Statsig is a Sequoia- and Madrona-backed Series B data and analytics startup, built by a talented team of ex-Facebook engineers and PMs. We’re experiencing rapid growth and are looking for a General Counsel to join our team and play a critical role in guiding our legal strategy, compliance, and risk management as we scale.

In this role, you’ll partner with every function across the company, providing counsel on employment law, business contracts, and strategic risk assessment. As the first legal hire, you’ll have the opportunity to define and build the legal function from the ground up, making a significant impact on our business operations and strategic direction.

Who We’re Looking For

Statsig is seeking a General Counsel who lives the Statsig values and brings:

- 4+ years of experience in law practice, with a strong focus on employment law, commercial contracts, and regulatory compliance in the technology or SaaS sector.

- Proficiency in drafting and negotiating business contracts across various functions, such as customer agreements, partnership contracts, and vendor agreements.

- Expertise in employment law, including guidance on HR policies, employee relations, and compliance with applicable employment regulations.

- Strong risk assessment and mitigation skills, with an ability to develop frameworks and processes to ensure compliance and reduce risk exposure.

- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to clearly explain complex legal issues to non-legal stakeholders.

- A proactive, solution-oriented mindset, with experience in rapidly growing organizations and a flexible approach to handling new and emerging challenges.

This role is ideal for candidates with a passion for technology, an interest in building scalable processes, and a strategic approach to legal advisory. Experience at a startup or in a high-growth tech environment is a plus.

This is an in-person role, based in Bellevue, Washington.

Key Responsibilities

- Legal Strategy & Compliance: Define and implement legal strategies aligned with company goals, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements and supporting business objectives.

- Contracts & Transactions: Draft, negotiate, and review a wide range of contracts, including customer agreements, vendor contracts, partnership agreements, and NDAs, ensuring favorable terms and risk mitigation.

- Employment Law & HR Support: Counsel on employment matters, including hiring practices, employee relations, and compliance with labor regulations to support a healthy workplace culture.

- Risk Assessment & Mitigation: Develop and implement risk management frameworks and processes, identifying potential legal risks and creating proactive mitigation strategies.

- Regulatory Compliance: Stay current on relevant laws and regulations affecting the business, including data privacy, cybersecurity, and industry-specific requirements, and ensure the company adheres to them.

- Cross-functional Collaboration: Partner closely with product, engineering, finance, and other teams to provide legal input on strategic initiatives, product development, and business growth.

- External Communication & Representation: Represent the company in legal matters with external parties, such as regulators, partners, and other stakeholders, while protecting company interests.

Compensation & team structure

Compensation for this role is commensurate with experience; salary will fall roughly between $140K - $200K, with additional upside in the form of equity for a total compensation package that is equivalent to that of a top-tier law or technology firm

This hire will report to the Business & Operations Manager (Julie Leary), and sit on a bizops team that spans operations (recruiting, HR, accounting) and strategy.
