Technical Lead, Product Engineering

Hi, we're The Browser Company 👋 and we're building a better way to use the internet.

Browsers are unique in that they are one of the only pieces of software that you share with your parents as well as your kids. Which makes sense, they're our doorway to the most important things — through them we socialize with loved ones, work on our passion projects, and explore our curiosities. But on their own, they don’t actually do a whole lot, they’re kind of just there. They don’t help us organize our messy lives or make it easier to compose our ideas. We believe that the browser could do so much more — it can empower and support the amazing things we do on the internet. That’s why we’re building one: a browser that can help us grow, create, and stay curious.

To accomplish this lofty task, we’re building a diverse team of people from different backgrounds and experiences. This isn’t optional, it’s crucial to our mission, as we need a wide range of perspectives to challenge our assumptions and shape our browser through a bold, creative lens. With that in mind, we especially encourage women, people of color, and others from historically marginalized groups to apply.

About The Role

As a Technical Leader on our Product Engineering team, you will be instrumental in our team’s ability to ship first-of-its-kind features that change how people experience the internet. Tech leads are responsible for taking ambiguous goals and helping their team design and ship sleek features that allow our members to do their best work, get the answers they need quickly, and feel delight when using the internet again.

You will drive improvements to our architecture, design elegant solutions to tough technical challenges, and continually push to make what we build (and how we build it) better every day.

Overall you will...

  • Lead, architect, and drive major product initiatives across existing and new 0-to-1 features, which meaningfully impact an industry-leading browser: the tool we live our lives in.

  • Collaborate closely with Design, Membership, Data, and our Leadership teams to brainstorm, prototype, and launch new features and solutions that delight users and solve real problems.

  • Support and mentor a talented team of product engineers, helping them grow both technically and with a product mindset through fast iteration cycles.

  • Proactively improve, identify and implement engineering-wide processes and architecture with an eye towards performance, stability, and maintainability.

  • Sweat the small stuff to deliver high-craft, industry-leading, interaction-rich user experiences which set the bar for what's possible.

After 1 month you will...

  • Get onboarded onto the team and codebase with an onboarding buddy

  • Receive a number of onboarding presentation on how we give each other feedback, the phases a startup goes through, our technical strategy, and more

  • Get familiar with Swift and our development environment

  • Ship some bug fixes and small features across our codebase

  • Pair program with a large portion of the engineering team

After 3 months you will...

  • Have worked on several medium to large size projects across the codebase

  • Become the point of contact for bugs and product iterations of a core product surface area

  • Be contributing to product discussions about certain product surface areas

  • Be involved in weekly engineering discussions about our architecture, code related processes, and more

  • Be regularly posting feedback about using the browser in our #dogfooding channel

  • Be familiar with our testing infrastructure, and setting best practices by contributing tests with new features

  • Be contributing to on-call rotations and jumping into incidents to support the team.

After 6 months you will...

  • Be interview trained and interviewing candidates for roles at the Browser Company

  • Be familiar with some C++ and how we interact with the underlying browser engine

  • Have proactively shared prototypes and technical approaches for quickly exploring new product ideas

  • Have proactively improved and suggested engineering-wide processes and architecture with an eye towards performance, stability, and maintainability

  • Be leading projects from idea to launch, taking full ownership of the development lifecycle

  • Be mentoring and pair programming with newer engineers to help them ramp onto the codebase

Qualifications

  • 8+ year of experience developing high-craft software products on iOS/macOS, in Swift or Objective-C

  • You’re experienced in solving ambiguous problems and have successfully owned complex technical initiatives and projects that have had an outsized impact on a business.

  • You possess a proven ability to influence and build relationships with senior leaders and cross-functional partners.

  • You have a proven track record for mentoring folks who are further along in their career and coming up with creative solutions to unblock yourself and others

  • You’re pragmatic, motivated by nebulous problems, and excited to work in a startup environment with quick product validation cycles.

  • Most of our team are based in North American time zones and require that folks have 4+ hours of overlap time with team members in Eastern Time Zone.
