Buyer, Furniture and Textiles

The Thuma team is looking to hire a Buyer on the Merchandising team. Reporting to the Head of Product Development and Merchandising, this role will be responsible for leading the product assortment strategy and execution for Furniture and Textiles categories. You will play a pivotal role in driving our business forward by curating and developing compelling assortments that resonate with our clientele and deliver to our financial goals. Your expertise in market trends, product development, and data-driven decision making will be crucial in achieving our business objectives. 


Thuma’s Headquarters is based in the historic Presidio neighborhood of San Francisco. This is a hybrid role, and while we don’t mandate any in-office time, candidates should be available to come into our SF office.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Drive the strategic product vision and business for Furniture and Textile categories through competitive market analysis, a deep understanding of the home market and trends, and analysis of our current business and clientele
  • Create short, mid, and long term strategies to maximize category opportunities and support overall Thuma strategic priorities
  • Collaborate and partner closely with cross functional teams to deliver flawless execution of products from concept to scale. Key partners include design, sourcing, inventory, marketing, and creative teams
  • Analyze sales data, market research, and client feedback to inform product and merchandising decisions. Present recommendations and strategic next steps to leadership
  • Manage the open-to-buy process in partnership with inventory teams. Ensure appropriate sales forecasts, inventory levels, and create clear plans to meet financial targets 
  • Drive the product development process in partnership with the design team. Provide guidance, ensure product market fit, and drive execution from concept to launch
  • Lead the storytelling, delivery, and communication of all product information for go-to-market planning. Partner with creative and marketing teams, ensuring the final product execution aligns to the original strategy and is positioned most competitively within the market
  • Advise and guide product marketing in all channels. Ensure products are merchandised and represented in their best light across copy, imagery, UX, retail 
  • Support the merchandising team with other projects and deliverables as needed


This Might Describe You:
  • 5+ years of experience in buying roles within Furniture and Textiles sectors, with a proven track record of scaling a category in growth and profitability
  • Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Merchandising, or related field
  • Experience with product development in partnership with design teams
  • Entrepreneurial mindset and strategic ability to develop and implement long-term category strategies that align to company objectives
  • Strong analytical mindset with proficiency in market research, data analysis, and financial management
  • Excellent eye for design and aesthetic taste, intrinsically understand products and trends that appeal to our clients 
  • Ability to effectively balance the art and science (data) to inform strategic assortment decisions
  • Strong story-telling skills, great at communicating product vision and financial impact to gain buy in and alignment from cross functional partners
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across departments and influence stakeholders
  • Passion for innovation and continuous learning, with a keen interest in design and the latest trends impacting the industry
  • Self starter, ability to work autonomously and drive projects forward 
  • Past experience leading and developing a team, with a desire to mentor others and foster a collaborative work environment
  • Ability to thrive in a fast paced environment and are comfortable with ambiguity and autonomy
  • Team player with a positive attitude 


$110,000 - $130,000 a year
Thuma provides an estimate of the compensation for roles that may be hired as required by state regulations. Compensation may vary based on (a) location, as Thuma factors in specific location when benchmarking compensation for most roles; (b) individual candidate skills and qualifications; and (c) individual candidate experience.

Additionally, Thuma leverages current market data to determine compensation, so posted compensation figures are subject to change as new market data becomes available.
