Substation Protection & Controls Engineer

Job Description

Timmons Group is currently seeking a Substation Protection & Control Electrical Engineer/Designer to join our Electrical Design Group located in our Charlotte, NC office location. Responsibilities include preparation of P&C substation project design, studies, and technical documents in the support of the design of substation projects throughout the country.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities of a successful candidate include but are not limited to:

  • Perform and direct others in the detailed design of medium to high-voltage utility substations
  • Perform detailed design, including one-line diagrams, protection and control schematics, elementary and wiring diagrams, SCADA, communications, conduit, and cable sizing/routing, and selection of substation P&C equipment
  • Must be able to take a written scope document and develop a detailed P&C substation design and drawing package using good engineering judgment and industry/client standards with minimal oversight
  • Occasional travel will be required

Skills/Requirements of a successful candidate include but are not limited to:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from accredited program
  • Five (5) or more years of experience in utility substation design
  • Engineer in Training Certification / Professional Engineer registration strongly preferred
  • Experience in 15kV through 138kV substation design and IEEE/ANSI standards
  • Experience in 230kV thru 500kV substation design is a plus
  • Microstation (V8 or newer) or AutoCAD (20016 or newer) is a plus
  • Experience performing P&C design in AutoCAD Electrical
  • Experience filling the substation P&C design engineer role for multiple concurrent projects (brownfield and greenfield projects)
  • Strong preference for those with
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
    • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
    • Capability of solving difficult programs that require adaptation and modification of standard approaches, techniques, procedures and criteria
