Overview:  

 

GSI Engineering, a Universal Engineering Sciences (UES) Company, has an opening in our Construction Services Department. UES is a nationwide leader in Geotechnical Engineering, Construction Materials Testing and Inspection, Building Code Compliance, Environmental, Occupational Health & Safety, and Building Envelope.


Summary 

The Certified Welding Inspector is a key role, responsible for ensuring the quality and integrity of welded structures by conducting inspections, verifying compliance with industry standards and project specifications, and collaborating with engineering teams to uphold welding best practices. The ideal candidate is a reliable, trustworthy individual who thrives in a fast-paced environment where both collaboration and autonomy are valued.

Physical Demands & Work Environment

• Required to drive, stand, walk, use hands to type, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance, talk, and hear. Body motions and movements include bending, twisting, reaching, stooping, pulling, kneeling, lifting, carrying, and pushing, with or without reasonable accommodation

• Lifting and/or moving up to thirty-five pounds regularly is expected, with or without reasonable accommodation

• This job is primarily and regularly exposed to outside weather conditions and construction sites where the noise level is usually moderate to loud


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Conducts welding inspections at job sites. Report data in an accurate, complete, timely, and understandable fashion in accordance with applicable inspection procedures
  • Studies and interprets engineering drawings, blueprints, and specifications to understand project requirements
  • Operates a motor vehicle. Maintain company vehicle (schedule oil changes, check fluid levels, inside/outside upkeep)
  • Possession of relevant welding certifications is often preferred. Common certifications include those from the American Welding Society (AWS) or other recognized certifying bodies.
  • Works closely with other team members, such as fabricators, engineers, and supervisors, to ensure that the project is completed efficiently and meets quality standards.
  • Communicates with dispatching and/or field supervisor, advising of current job status and locations as required. Cellular phones are to be worn at all times and calls are to be returned in a timely manner
  • Ensures that project requirements are met and compliant with project specifications, requirements, and company policies or procedures.
  • Adheres to safety protocols and guidelines to protect oneself and others in the work environment. This includes the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and maintaining a safe workspace.
  • Regular attendance is required. Technicians must arrive on time for scheduled jobs.

Required Qualifications:
  • Valid Driver’s License with an acceptable driving record (in accordance with our Driver’s License and Motor Vehicle Record Check Criteria), may or may not be required to perform the duties and responsibilities of the role
  • Ability to pass a background check screen
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Completion of a welding certification program or relevant vocational training
  • Proven experience as a welder in a similar role
  • Certified Welding Inspector Certification
  • Proficient in reading and interpreting blueprints and technical drawings
  • Knowledge of various welding techniques and equipment
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing high-quality work
  • Physical stamina and dexterity for prolonged periods of standing, bending, and lifting
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently or as part of a team
  • Knowledge of safety protocols and willingness to adhere to them
  • Ability to read and write, including interpreting documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals, as well as writing routine reports and correspondence and speaking effectively with colleagues, supervisors, and customers/clients
  • Computer skills sufficient to operate a laptop, including sending and receiving emails, and the ability to learn Field Data Collection (FDC)/Inspector Gadget to input data and prepare reports
  • Mathematical skills sufficient to add, subtract, multiply, and divide into all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals
  • Reasoning ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, and diagram form

  • Relevant welding certifications recognized by the American Welding Society (AWS) or other recognized agency
