Graduate Advisor

Job Summary:This position has primary student services responsibility for the Department of Physics professional Masters of Science in Physics-Quantum Computing (MSPQC) program. In addition, it supports certain PhD program activities. The position works closely with the MSPQC Associate Director, the PhD-Physics Graduate Program Manager and the Physics Undergraduate Advisor.The Department of Physics provides a collegial and supportive environment, and values work-life balance. The successful candidate will contribute to an inclusive, fair, and equitable environment that fosters engagement and a sense of belonging for faculty, staff, students and members of the broader community.Responsibilities:Coordinates and executes the development and implementation of the administrative and student service activities of graduate degree program(s) and/or certificate(s). Performs activities which may include: recruitment, admissions, new student orientation, academic advising, monitoring of progress towards the degree, course and/or enrollment management, diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives, course and/or program assessment, and academic program review. Strives to create a welcoming, equitable, and inclusive work environment.• 15% Serves as the primary resource for graduate applicants ,current students, faculty, staff, and other stakeholders of an academic program• 10% Provides information and resources about educational options and graduate school academic requirements; assists with identifying and assessing interests, skills, and values to match appropriate field of study/career options and refers students to appropriate institutional resources• 15% Provides in-depth advising services promoting graduate student success, retention, and degree completion. Advises graduate students on programs, curriculum, graduate education, and university policies, processes, and procedures• 20% Monitors degree progress and assists students in navigating resources and systems throughout the student lifecycle from matriculation to degree completion• 5% Maintains confidentiality and accurate student records and processes and responds to academic inquiries according to established institutional and Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) policies• 10% Maintains compliance with graduate program(s), school/college, and university requirements and technology systems related to admissions, assessment, academic degree progress/requirements, and program review• 5% Provides guidance and/or develops policy and procedure recommendations and/or changes related to graduate programs• 5% Participates in the campus-wide advising community, graduate community, etc. providing input to leadership regarding the development of advising, recruitment, and co/curricular programs offered by the school/college• 15% Assists with career development activities across all Physics student groups (BA/BS, MS, and Ph.D.)Institutional Statement on Diversity:Diversity is a source of strength, creativity, and innovation for UW-Madison.
