Job Description

The Central Civil Works Department is growing quickly in the Great Lakes and Mid-West area, and we are looking for a Senior Structural Engineering Discipline Lead who wants to help us grow a strong structural team in this area. We are excited to build a diverse team of engineers that specialize in flood risk management systems, locks and dams, floodwalls, navigation floodgates, stormwater pumping stations, outfalls, spillways, and ecosystem restoration. Our department works on projects and with teams across the nation and the world. We bring together the skills of project managers, civil engineers, H&H engineers, geotechnical engineers, structural engineers, and environmental and planning specialists to provide integrated, sustainable and cost-effective solutions. This position is a hybrid position.

Our clients include private, local, national and global organizations, including water utilities and drainage authorities throughout the United States. This position would mostly work on federal projects for clients like, USACE, USIBWC, FEMA, NRCS, etc.

In this position as the Structural Engineering Discipline Lead or Project Structural Design Manager on large flood risk management projects job duties:

  • Structural Design Leadership: Conceptualize the structural design and oversee preparation of structural analyses, plans, specifications, cost estimates, technical reports, and other project documents; utilize standard techniques, procedures, and criteria while using advanced methods to innovate structural solutions on flood risk management projects from pursuit through construction.
  • Collaborate: With Client and AECOM counterparts to ensure stakeholder buy in to solutions, and also contribute to AECOMs wider technical capability and innovative approach.
  • Deliver Quality: Oversee and review work produced by others, as well as following all quality control measures to ensure timely and accurate results.
  • Explore and Harness: Seek opportunities to innovate and trial new methods by being inquisitive and forward thinking.
  • Mentor: Delegate tasks, direct and oversee the work of others and act as a technical mentor.
  • Be Part of the Team: Work closely with the multi-discipline project team, including civil, geotechnical, H&H engineers, structural engineers, mechanical engineers, electrical engineer, surveyors, and consultants.
  • Additional work includes:
    • Ensure compliance of design with all applicable standards and regulations, providing the seal and signature of the professional engineer.
    • Participate in alternatives analyses and value engineering
    • Perform constructability reviews
    • Conduct site visits at active construction sites to examine field conditions, site work that is under construction, site utilities, sediment and erosion control inspections, as built conditions
    • Present to clients for projects and proposals, as needed
    • Provide expertise on number of hours and assumptions for cost proposals, and determine staffing requirements for the defined scope and schedule
    • Assist on proposals and with business development, as needed

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or related engineering field + 8 years of relevant experience or demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education
  • Professional Engineer license in one state in the US and able to easily obtain licenses in other states via reciprocity. NCEES profile is a plus.
  • Experience working on federal projects for agencies like USACE, USIBWC, FEMA, NRCS, etc.
  • Valid Driver’s License required
  • US Citizen or permanent resident

Additional Preferred Experience

  • Masters in Structural Engineering
  • Expertise in structural design and construction requirements for flood risk management projects, like dams, locks, floodwalls, stormwater pump stations navigation floodgates, etc.
  • Working knowledge of federal flood control design guidelines, like USACE Engineering Manuals and FEMA’s 44 CFR Section 65.
  • Senior Level: 15+ years of experience as a Structural Engineer, 10+ years of experience with the design of flood risk management projects.
  • Leadership in at least one lock and dam system design project in the last 10 years
  • A working knowledge of Bentley OpenRoads and AutoCAD Civil 3D.
  • Flood Risk Management design and construction projects specifically for USACE
  • Ability to communicate effectively with colleagues, contractors and clients
  • Experience in alternative delivery projects, not necessarily in flood risk
  • Excellent understanding of the following software: SAP2000, Excel, CPGA, and GROUP management
