About the role

Betterment’s mission is to empower people to do what’s best for their money so that they can live better. As a Product Manager for our Core User Experience team, you’ll be responsible for both the early and tenured user product journeys, focusing on the front-end experience beyond the initial growth funnel which serves as the core interface for customers from all three of our lines of business. This team serves the holistic user experience platform upon which we can add new features seamlessly. 

You are a customer-obsessed product manager who relishes rolling up your sleeves to get exciting products to market. You are a natural collaborator who makes things happen by knowing how, and when, to engage cross-functional teams in the pursuit of success. You are analytical by nature, experienced in A/B testing, and believe in iterating your way to breakthrough customer experiences. You are the entrepreneurial “glue” between engineering, design, analytics, and legal/compliance, working to deliver key initiatives with executional excellence. 

As a Product Manager, your role will balance executional product management skills with a growth-oriented perspective, helping to enable customer growth and engagement by weaving together both product and marketing strategy. In this practice of product management, we strive to experiment, take calculated risks, and steer our broader product toward growth, and we do this across Betterment’s three lines of business. This role is highly collaborative with the expectation to build genuine relationships throughout many teams.

This role is based out of our NYC office. Below we've reflected the base salary range we would offer for this position. Actual salaries may vary depending on factors including but not limited to location, experience, and performance. The range listed is just one component of Betterment’s total compensation package for employees. 

  • New York City: $105,000 - $115,000

This job may also be eligible for variable compensation in the form of a company incentive bonus. For jobs based out of our NYC HQ, we require in office attendance Tuesday through Thursday, weekly.

A day in the life

  • Understand the financial pain points that Americans in our target market experience on a regular basis.
  • Obsess over the health of your product; develop a deep level of user empathy through product data, competitive analysis, and user research.
  • Collaborate with key stakeholders to translate a forward-looking vision for customer engagement into an actionable, high ROI roadmap. 
  • Help define and refine our product strategy, planning, and execution for customer engagement via the core UX. This includes new efforts, enhancements, and maintenance of existing features.
  • Develop key success metrics for new product releases & track usage against those metrics.
  • Collaborate with your product teammates responsible for adjacent applications to ensure a cohesive product experience across the early and tenured user experiences.
  • Alongside your Engineering Manager, help lead your team’s agile project management processes, going deep with your team of engineers on how our product is built.

  • Experience working as a Product Manager in a software development setting across an interdisciplinary team of product, design, and engineering
  • Prowess at cultivating relationships with cross-functional teams and stakeholders
  • Excellent written and spoken communication skills (compelling storytelling in presentations and concise product docs)
  • Decisiveness and ownership while assisting with product development decisions
  • Attention to detail and great organizational skills in a fast-paced environment

What happens next

We’ll take a few weeks to review all applications. If we’d like to spend more time with you, we’ll reach out to arrange next steps, which will include 3-4 sets of meetings with your future colleagues.

In the interview process, we’ll look to learn more about your skills, experiences, capabilities, and motivators. Many of our questions will be aimed at understanding how you might operate here at Betterment. Depending on the role, we may ask you to complete a case study exercise or technical assessments, as we want to collect a robust set of data points to better inform our decisions.

On average, it takes us around 3-5 weeks to make a hiring decision, depending on your availability and sense of urgency. As a best practice, we aim to interview at least 2-3 final round candidates before making a hiring decision. Please note that, as we usually receive an overwhelming number of  applications for open positions, we’re unable to offer individual feedback during the interview process.
