Staff Design Systems Designer

About the Design Team at Gorgias

The Gorgias Design team currently consists of 10 talented individuals, with plans to expand to a team of 18 by the end of 2025. Our designers are based in various time zones, including Paris, New York, LA, and London. While each designer primarily focuses on their respective product team, closely collaborating with PMs and engineers, we also make sure to prioritize a strong connection within the Design team as a whole.

We have regular ceremonies such as Design Ops Weekly and Design Critiques, and we're continuously experimenting with new methods of asynchronous collaboration. This helps us to ensure consistency in our work and to foster mutual support and mentorship among all team members.

About the Design Systems Team @Gorgias

As the Staff Design Systems Designer, you’ll report directly to Design leadership. This is a unique opportunity to shape Gorgias’ next chapter. As the first dedicated design systems owner, you will drive initiatives that enhance both the pace and quality of our work while supporting our ambitious product roadmap. This role is critical in maturing a cohesive, scalable design system that empowers our teams to deliver world-class products and exceptional customer experiences.

As the Staff Design Systems Designer, you’ll play a pivotal role in evolving and implementing our design system, ensuring consistency, accessibility, and usability across our portfolio. You’ll lead the development of scalable patterns and maintain a robust design source of truth, while also focusing on elevating UI and interaction design quality to create intuitive and impactful user experiences. Additionally, you’ll collaborate on strategic design initiatives across the business, driving innovation and aligning with Gorgias’ vision to lead in ecommerce customer experience.

What You'll Do

  • Define and Evolve Gorgias’ Design System: Collaborate with designers and engineers to shape Gorgias’ visual language, including typography, color, iconography, and components. Use tools like Figma, Storybook, and design tokens to build and maintain a cohesive, accessible design system seamlessly integrated into the codebase. Conduct UI audits to resolve inconsistencies and align with Gorgias’ standards.

  • Holistic Problem-Solving: Apply strategic thinking to evolve the design system, addressing challenges that impact teams and merchants. Balance innovation with practicality to enhance usability, ensure consistency, and improve cross-product cohesiveness.

  • Inspire Innovation and Elevate Design Standards: Drive innovation by introducing forward-thinking approaches to design systems. Mentor the team to improve UX, interaction patterns, and design standards, creating exceptional customer experiences.

  • Support Strategic Initiatives: Develop scalable design patterns for key projects, such as AI Agent enhancements and the information architecture refresh. Collaborate with teams to update interfaces, improve responsiveness, and ensure accessibility and localization.

  • Communications and Cross-Functional Collaboration: Embed the design system across Gorgias by collaborating with product and engineering teams. Establish a contribution model to maintain and evolve the system, advocate its value, and educate teams on new patterns and components.

  • Champion Accessibility: Embed accessibility standards into the design system, ensuring WCAG and ADA compliance. Introduce innovative solutions to elevate user experience and inclusivity.

Who You Are

Experience & Expertise

  • Your portfolio highlights multiple design systems you’ve created or largely contributed to, showcasing a strong understanding of scalable design.

  • 5+ years in UI/UX design, with at least 2 years dedicated to design systems.

  • Proven ability to build, maintain, and scale design systems in fast-paced environments.

  • Technically minded with expertise in tools like Figma, Storybook, and design tokens, and experience managing scalable libraries.

  • Experienced in partnering closely with engineers, you understand the technical considerations of design system implementation.

  • Strong knowledge of accessibility standards (WCAG, ADA) and inclusive design principles.
