President & CEO

Purpose and Scope of Job: Reporting to the Board of Directors, the President & CEO has overall strategic and operational responsibility for LMR’s staff, programs, policies, and resource development, and assumes a leadership role in the region by partnering with collaborative organizations, foundations, government officials, nonprofits, and supporters in execution of its mission. This individual will serve as the face of the organization and viewed as a vital community leader.


Essential Functions (other duties may be assigned):

Organization Mission and Strategy:Lead the board and staff to ensure that the mission is fulfilled through strategic planning, programs, fundraising efforts, and community outreach.

  • Establish and maintain relationships with regional organizations and non-traditional communities to strategically advance LMR’s mission.
  • Convene, connect, and energize staff, alumni, and the community.
  • Implement programming that carries out the organization’s mission.
  • Guide the ongoing refinement of the strategic plan to ensure LMR can successfully fulfill its mission into the future.
  • Enhance the visibility and public image of LMR through active and visible engagement in the community and by working closely with other professional, civic, and private organizations.
  • Cultivate and engage LMR’s alumni network.

Financial Performance and Viability: Develop resources sufficient to ensure the financial health of the organization.

  • Ensure the fiscal integrity of LMR, to include submission to the Board of a proposed annual budget and monthly financial statements, which accurately reflect the financial condition of the organization.
  • Manage fiscal resources by operating within the approved budget, ensuring maximum resource utilization, and maintaining the organization in a positive financial position.
  • Implement and advance strategies for fundraising and identification of other resources necessary to support LMR’s mission (grant writing, business proposal development, etc.)


Organization Operations:
Grow and guide appropriate resources to ensure that operational efficiency and effectiveness is maintained.

  • Steer effective administration of operations.
  • Provide strong leadership and development and retention of staff at various levels.
  • Recruit, hire and retain a diverse, competent, and qualified staff.
  • Act as signatory authority for all notes, agreements, and other instruments made and entered into and on behalf of the organization.
  • Serve as LMR’s primary spokesperson to the organization’s constituents, the media, and the public.


Board Governance:
Lead the board to fulfill the organization's mission.

  • Lead LMR in a manner that supports and guides the organization’s mission as defined by the Board of Directors.
  • Communicate effectively with the Board and provide, in a timely and accurate manner, information necessary for the Board to function properly and make informed decisions.

Non-Essential Functions (performed on an infrequent basis):

  • Other duties as assigned by the Board of Directors.
  • Serve as an instructor and speaker on community leadership to public.

Interactions with Others (Internal and External):

  • Work collaboratively with LMR staff, board members, community partners, LMR graduates, community leaders and volunteers.
  • Manage vendors and consultants.

Working Conditions:

  • Remote work environment.
  • Time out of the office for meetings with volunteers, community leaders and vendors.
  • Limited travel.
  • Adequate transportation and communication devices are required and essential.
  • Flexible hours are required (includes after 5 p.m. and evenings).

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in business, leadership, or other field or equivalent work experience; relevant advanced degree is preferred.
  • Seven (7) or more years’ experience in a senior leadership role managing personnel, finances, operations, and governance.
  • Proven fundraising experience, including involvement with foundations, corporations, government funding, and grant writing.
  • Proven track record of developing and managing partnerships.
  • Nonprofit leadership experience preferred.

  • Must fully understand the dynamics of the Richmond region (familiarity with local governments, corporate leaders, philanthropy, and the nonprofit sector).

  • Ability to clearly communicate as a spokesperson in interviews, videos, and on social media.
  • Strong relationship, coalition builder and team collaborator.
  • Solid conflict management, problem solving and negotiation skills.
  • Maintains leadership qualities including open-mindedness, inclusive decision making, accountability and clear direction.
  • Experience leading a diverse Board of Directors or organization.  
  • Knowledge of budget development and monitoring.
  • Strong customer service ethic.
  • Intermediate knowledge of Microsoft Office (Outlook, Excel, Word, and PowerPoint).

Final Round Interviews will occur in two parts: one with staff and one with the final round interview team. The interview with the final round interview team will include a presentation, details of which will be provided prior to the final round interview.
