The Opportunity:
Mattel has an exciting opportunity to join its Law Department. Mattel’s Law Department supports the values and goals of the company by providing expert, creative, and timely service to all Mattel businesses and support functions. The Law Department is looking for a talented Paralegal to manage projects and coordinate activities among stakeholders. This role will be focused on providing day-to-day support to the Global Employment Law team and requires excellent communication skills, a can-do attitude, and an ability to support multiple tasks and individuals. The role will work closely with members of the Global Employment Law team, People & Culture, and other business functions, on employment law pre-litigation, litigation, and administrative matters, as well as internal employment law projects. The ideal candidate will exhibit the ability to maintain a high-level of confidentiality, organization, attention to detail, initiative, autonomy, and judgment, as well as an ability to effectively prioritize workflow and execute assignments. This is a dynamic role that requires a responsive, collaborative individual with high agility, professionalism, and comfort working in a lean and rapidly changing environment. The position will provide a range of paralegal support, including the specific tasks and responsibilities set forth below.
What Your Impact Will Be:
• Assist counsel with a broad scope of employment law matters including, but not limited to, recruitment and hiring, compensation and benefits, wage and hour, leaves of absence, accommodations, discrimination and harassment, performance management and discipline, termination of employment, workplace safety, and government audits
• Work independently to oversee document management strategies for the Global Employment Law practice
• Provide litigation support, including service of process, managing legal case files, coordinating tasks between internal and external partners, gathering evidence, and conducting in-house review of documents
• Lead in drafting objections and responses to subpoenas and requests for employment records
• Draft document preservation notices and communications, and manage Global Employment Law’s document preservation system
• Assist counsel with long-term and short-term internal projects involving, among other things, reviewing, drafting, updating, finalizing, and maintenance of policies, procedures, handbooks, and agreements
• Conduct basic legal research on employment law issues
• Prepare documents for filing, including, but not limited to, cite checking and organization of exhibits
• Maintain docket system tracking employment litigation and administrative matters
• Maintain EPLI bordereau
• Support outside counsel engagement, including review of legal invoices
• Manage vendor invoices and assist with budget development
• Other duties and projects, as assigned
What We’re Looking For:
• 2-4 years of paralegal experience supporting an employment law function in an in-house legal department or law firm
• Extensive knowledge of federal, state, and local employment litigation procedures, with proven working experience with discrimination, harassment, and wage and hour litigation cases
• Familiarity with labor and employment law, and human resources terminology and principles
• Ability to work independently, proactively, innovatively, and creatively while exercising sound judgment and taking ownership of projects
• Ability to maintain confidentiality and appropriately handle sensitive information with tact and discretion
• Ability to strategically build and shape management systems and processes for the Global Employment Law practice
• Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills and ability to speak up and interact with all levels of management
• Strong attention to detail and accuracy
• Excellent time management and organizational skills, ability to support multiple legal professionals, and effectively prioritize and manage work
• Strong research skills
• Excellent knowledge of Excel, Microsoft Word, Adobe, document and matter management systems (such as iManage and OneDrive), DocuSign, Microsoft Teams, and Zoom
• This role will work in person at our El Segundo, California offices
The base hourly rate for this position is between $35.00 and $43.00
**This range is indicative of projected hiring range, however base hourly rate will be determined based on a candidate’s work location, skills and experience.
