What You’ll Do: 

 

The Role: 

The Trustees is seeking a ranger at the iconic Chesterfield Gorge in the hill towns of Western Massachusetts to assist visitors, monitor resources, and ensure a safe enjoyable visit. The work period is weekend days and Monday holidays, mid-May through Columbus Day, working 7 hours per day. The Ranger reports to the Senior Regional Stewardship Manager, Northwest Berkshire area. 

 

Specifically, you’ll: 

 

  • Staff an entrance station and greet visitors in a welcoming manner 
  • Answer questions about The Trustees of Reservations and the history, geology and ecology of the property 
  • Educate visitors about The Trustees mission and encourage them to become active members 
  • Direct visitors to membership brochures, distribute flyers to the public and on bulletin boards 
  • Enforce rules and regulations of assigned properties 
  • Perform tasks safely and in accordance with The Trustees’ safety manual 
  • Behave in a professional manner with colleagues, property visitors and volunteers 
  • Collect admission and/or program fees. 
  • Keep both financial and visitation records and submit weekly reports by email 
  • Maintain clean facilities, parking lot and picnic areas 
  • Mow the lawn and keep the bathroom clean 
  • Report safety concerns, incidents, and maintenance needs to the Management Unit Superintendent and/or police and emergency services. 
  • Other duties as required 

 

This is a seasonal non-exempt position working approximately 14 hours per week reporting directly to the Senior Regional Stewardship manager.  

What You’ll Need: 

 

Skills and Experience: 

  • Excellent communication skills to interact with the public. 
  • Proven ability to work independently and collaboratively as a team member. 
  • Proven ability to complete assigned tasks and projects, meet deadlines, and manage multiple tasks. 
  • Experience using commercial grade landscape equipment (mowers/string trimming/etc.). 
  • Experience with safe use of chainsaws, tractors, and other heavy equipment is a plus. 
  • Strong commitment to the mission of The Trustees of Reservations. 

Other: 

  • The ability to work in all weather conditions, lift up to 40 pounds, push and pull heavy objects and climb ladders is required. 
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to pass a driving background check required for driving Trustees vehicles. 
  • CORI check required. 
  • Ability to obtain DOT physical card within 30 days 

 

 

Eligibility Criteria: 

  • Current authorization to work in the United States – a candidate must have such authorization by his or her first day of employment. 
  • A valid driver’s license, as well as a satisfactory driving record as outlined in The Trustees’ driving policy. 
  • A satisfactory criminal background (CORI) check.
