The Post-undergraduate Sustainability Innovation Fellow (PUGSIF) is designed to provide opportunities to learn and practice sustainability coordination and culture-building at a complex organization, have a direct impact in making UNH more sustainable, and contribute to student and employee sustainability awareness and education. It will draw upon, and deepen, the Fellow’s leadership, collaboration and near-peer mentorship skills. The role will involve a mixture of project coordination and implementation, outreach, and administrative tasks for a wide range of initiatives, including (but not limited to), those focused on sustainable campus landscape management, energy efficiency, transportation, waste minimization and diversion, as well as on outreach and reporting.
The PUGSIF will work closely with team members across the Sustainability Institute and across other campus units. This is an hourly position, with an expectation of full-time work. It will be primarily on-site as projects and student work demand, but some flexibility for remote work is expected. This is an excellent stepping stone for anyone interested in becoming a sustainability manager for a business, municipality or educational institution.
Duties/Responsibilities:
Project management (25%)
Work with SI staff and partners across campus to identify program deliverables, timelines and benchmarks campus sustainability projects including Cat Trax, pollinator gardens, Trash to Treasure (T2T), Sustainability Advocates, STARS, and/or others as relevant.
Develop and implement collaborative workplans (which will include student interns’ support and engagement) to meet those project deliverables.
Communicate clearly with the SI team to ensure knowledge of, and coordinate support for, campus sustainability initiatives.
Student mentorship and supervision (40%)
Meet weekly with interns to orient them to their projects and workplans, encourage them to refine and deepen workplans with their own knowledge, skills and interests; and support and collaborate with them in implementation.
Help students organize events and campaigns for their projects and support them in collaborating with each other.
Facilitate bi-weekly cohort meetings.
Outreach for sustainability projects and other SI initiatives (35%)
Represent SI at campus-wide and/or community events (e.g. tabling at U-Day, Admitted Student Visitor Days, etc.)
Conduct class visits as invited, sharing information about sustainability projects and programs at UNH
Work with SI communications team, other partners across campus, and sustainability interns to create website and social media content, signage, fliers, and /or other outreach for campus sustainability projects as needed.
Requirements
Minimum Acceptable Education & Experience:
Completed Bachelor’s degree from UNH, from any college/department
At least two years’ experience working with and contributing to UNH’s sustainability initiatives and practices (e.g. STARS, Ecosystem Protection, Cat Trax Bike Share, WildCAP, etc) through the Sustainability Institute.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
A passion for implementing sustainability practices
Experience and strengths as a peer mentor and leader
Experience and proficiency as a project manager and as a collaborator
Organization, attention to detail, flexibility and diligence
Strong oral and written communication skills
Demonstrated problem-solving skills and insatiable curiosity
A professional, positive demeanor
Willingness to work on campus most of the time (not remotely)
Willingness and ability to physically support programs when needed (i.e. lift 20 pounds, get dirty, etc)
Demonstrated willingness and ability to ask for help and involve collaborators when appropriate, work independently when appropriate
Proficiency with Outlook, Teams, SharePoint as collaboration tools .
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience working for campus units other than the Sustainability Institute (e.g., Housing or Res Life, Dining, Facilities, etc.)
Graphic design skills and interests
Student leadership experience/training.
