Staff/Principal Designer

As a Staff/Principal Designer, you will help define and prototype future use cases, driving our vision for new social experiences across VR and our expansion to other platforms. You’ll collaborate with the VP of Design, design leadership, and cross-functional partners to imagine what’s next for VRChat, leveraging your expertise in spatial design, visual storytelling, and rapid iteration. While the role is vision-oriented, you will integrate insights and feedback from ongoing execution, experimentation, and user research to establish visions grounded in the realities of our user needs and tech capabilities. This work will ultimately inform roadmaps and future investments.


Responsibilities
  • Visualize Possibilities: Communicate compelling possibilities for VRChat’s future, focusing on new social experiences across VR and other platforms
  • Prototyping & Exploration: Create mockups and prototypes to explore future use cases and concepts that will inform our strategies
  • Iterate with Insights: Collaborate with user research and execution teams to inform and refine directions.
  • Immersion across Platforms: Bring your expertise in cross-platform design to innovate on how immersive social translates across lower-immersion platforms
  • Collaborate Across Teams: Align with design, engineering, and product teams to ensure the vision is feasible and aligns with VRChat’s goals
  • Inclusive Design: Foster collaboration and inclusivity, ensuring diverse perspectives shape the design process


Preferred Skills and Experience
  • Extensive experience in product design, with a portfolio showcasing innovation and strong visual storytelling
  • Experience integrating user research into design decisions and iterating based on feedback
  • Proven ability to lead design efforts, with a strong bias toward collaboration
  • Understanding of user-centered design principles, particularly as applied to social platforms and virtual worlds
  • Comfortable working in ambiguous environments, adapting designs as new insights emerge
  • Excellent communication skills to articulate complex ideas to cross-functional teams


Bonus Points
  • Experience designing for VR, AR, as well as mobile, desktop and other platforms
  • Familiarity with user research methodologies and testing
  • Experience in a similar space, designing for virtual worlds and social interaction
  • Experience with Unity or other game engine technologies
