Friction Engineer

Job Description:

PURPOSE

This position will be responsible for developing new friction material formulations / processes.  This includes creating completely new ceramic / semi-metallic / hybrid formulations to modifying the existing portfolio for cost optimization / raw material changes due to supply chain issues.

                                                           

Job Duties

  • Develop friction formulations that meet performance and cost targets
  • Work with other stake holders to ensure formulations and raw materials align with company goals
  • Develop new raw material suppliers in alignment with Purchasing Department strategies
  • Work with manufacturing facilities to support production / VAVE activities
  • Continuously benchmark competitive product to understand the marketplace product evolution
  • Interpret and make decisions based on dynamometer test reports
  • Characterize raw materials via thermal analysis tools, XRF, SEM and particle size analyzer
  • Reverse engineer competitive formulations using analytical tools
  • Register and keep up-to-date friction edge codes for friction coefficient and copper regulations
  • Be self-motivated, organized, and efficient
  • Take on other responsibilities as assigned

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Education

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Materials Science and Engineering, Chemical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering (higher degree preferred)

Minimum experience

  • Friction material formulations
  • Friction raw material suppliers and the functioning of raw materials
  • Manufacturing of friction materials
  • Use of analytical equipment (DSC, TGA, DMA, XRF, etc.) used in friction material development
  • Knowledge of Microsoft products (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Access, etc.)
  • Strong analytical skill sets
  • Ability to work in a cross-functional environment
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Experience working with remote colleagues
  • Attention to detail and accuracy in data entry
