The Opportunity

We’re looking for a Data Engineer to join Monstro as the first data-focused hire. You’ll be responsible for building the foundation of our data infrastructure — designing pipelines, normalizing and modeling financial data, standing up storage systems, and powering the APIs that feed our products.

This is a high-impact, foundational role. You’ll collaborate across engineering, product, and design teams to ensure Monstro’s systems are scalable, secure, and built to support both internal tools and user-facing insights. You’ll help us make sense of messy financial data and turn it into something powerful, usable, and elegant — all while shaping the core data stack from scratch.

The ideal candidate is an experienced data engineer who thrives in early-stage environments. You’re comfortable building and owning data systems end-to-end, collaborating across disciplines, and helping define how data becomes a strategic advantage at Monstro.

Responsibilities

Infrastructure & Data Architecture

  • Design, implement, and maintain scalable data infrastructure and internal APIs

  • Build systems for secure, reliable, and accessible storage of financial and transactional data

  • Normalize messy, multi-source financial data into structured, usable formats

Pipeline Development

  • Own the design and maintenance of ETL/ELT pipelines to ingest and transform data

  • Ensure data quality, integrity, and performance across all systems

  • Collaborate with engineering to integrate pipelines into Monstro’s platform

Tech Stack & Foundation

  • Evaluate and recommend tools, frameworks, and technologies for our data ecosystem

  • Set standards for data architecture, privacy, and scalability

  • Establish internal documentation and data governance practices

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Work closely with product, design, and engineering to ensure data infrastructure supports product needs

  • Enable the creation of user-facing data features, dashboards, and insights

  • Support internal stakeholders with access to clean, well-structured data for decision-making

Scalability & Ownership

  • Build with scale in mind, ensuring systems grow alongside Monstro’s user base

  • Play a key role in hiring and mentoring future data team members as we grow

Qualifications

Experience & Skills

  • 5+ years of experience in data engineering, backend engineering, or infrastructure

  • Deep experience designing data pipelines and storage systems from scratch

  • Strong SQL skills and proficiency in one or more data-oriented languages (Python, Scala, etc.)

  • Experience working with API development and integrating data pipelines into product ecosystems

  • Familiarity with cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, Azure), data warehouses (e.g., Snowflake, BigQuery), and orchestration tools (e.g., Airflow, dbt)

  • Strong understanding of data normalization, schema design, and system performance

Soft Skills & Mindset

  • You’re a builder — excited to architect foundational systems and make strategic tech decisions

  • Collaborative and communicative — you work well with technical and non-technical teammates

  • Quality- and security-minded — especially with sensitive financial data

  • Energized by Monstro’s mission to bring intelligence and clarity to the world of personal and institutional finance

Why Monstro?
