The Identity Verification team is modernizing identity data and anti-fraud solutions to empower companies to optimize customer onboarding experiences whilst protecting them from fraud.  The team focuses on helping our customers with two things: Onboard new users quickly, safely, and compliantly (Identity Verification, Layer) Prevent fraudulent users from being on their services (Monitor, Beacon). The Layer team within IDV is a fast-moving and customer-obsessed team that is building out a breakout product for financial onboarding. This product lives much earlier in customer onboarding funnels, increasing conversion through a combination of cutting edge fraud checks and Plaid’s uniquely positioned data moat.


As an Engineering Manager on the IDV Layer team, you will guide and grow a team of engineers, own the product roadmap in partnership with PMs, and architect core systems to meet ambitious scaling and revenue goals. You’ll set technical strategy, coach your reports, and be hands-on (40–60% of the time) writing code, prototyping, and reviewing designs. You’ll coordinate cross-functionally within IDV and across other Plaid orgs, shaping the future of a high-impact “startup within a startup.


Responsibilities
  • People management (career growth, performance management, feedback)
  • Contribute to architecture, design, and code (40–60% hands-on)
  • Partner with PMs to set team direction, scope sprints, and prioritize effectively
  • Deliver features and improvements quickly to support large deals and scale revenue
  • Coordinate cross-functionally with IDV Core, Verify, Foundations, and other Plaid teams
  • Foster a positive team culture rooted in ownership, scrappiness, and technical excellence
  • Setting team strategy in partnership with PM counterparts & managing execution (eg planning, prioritization, sprints, etc)


Qualifications
  • 2+ years of TLM and 1+ years of engineering management experience with significant experience as a software engineer
  • Ability to be hands-on by contributing to system architecture and through individual code contributions through 40-60% of your time on a small team
  • Experience owning a scaled product and working with a product manager and/or business partners to drive business impact
  • Capable of building a deep understanding of customer needs and translating them into technical requirements and solutions.
  • Passion for fostering high-functioning teams and creating a positive, productive team culture.
  • Proven track record of finding creative solutions to complex problems, overcoming obstacles, and driving projects to successful completion with a scrappy, can-do attitude.
  • High ownership. Must be able to step up and own your success and the success of your team.
  • Proven track record of enhancing your reports and providing individuals with meaningful opportunities for growth


$214,800 - $366,000 a year
The target base salary for this position ranges from $214,800/year to $366,000/year in Zone 1. 
The target base salary will vary based on the job's location. 

Our geographic zones are as follows:
Zone 1 - New York City and San Francisco Bay Area 
Zone 2 - Los Angeles, Seattle, Washington D.C.
Zone 3 - Austin, Boston, Denver, Houston, Portland, Sacramento, San Diego
Zone 4 - Raleigh-Durham and all other US cities

Additional compensation in the form(s) of equity and/or commission are dependent on the position offered. Plaid provides a comprehensive benefit plan, including medical, dental, vision, and 401(k). Pay is based on factors such as (but not limited to) scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate's work experience and skillset, and location. Pay and benefits are subject to change at any time, consistent with the terms of any applicable compensation or benefit plans.
