Supervises: Outdoor Programs Coordinator

Scope: The Deputy Chapter Director works with the Senior Chapter Director to implement policies and programs of the Minnesota Chapter.  They will manage the budget and operations of the following operational areas: fundraising, communications, data, and management.  Carries out the policies, priorities and objectives of the Chapter for the assigned areas of chapter programs and operations. They will direct activities in areas of fundraising, communications, data and manage staff and supporter volunteers as delegated by the Chapter Director. They will also serve as acting director in the absence of the director.


Job activities include but are not limited to:
  • Fundraising. Responsible for leading overall strategy for Chapter fundraising, in collaboration with the Chapter Director and volunteer leadership. Designs and implements large donor data management and cultivation strategies, in coordination with Volunteer Teams. Leads direct mail program. Cultivates grant program officer relationships. Write grants. Plans donor events. 
  • Communications. Responsible for leading the overall strategy for Chapter communications, in collaboration with the volunteer Communications Team. Manages print and digital communications in alignment with chapter strategy and resources. Provides communications strategy and support for key projects as they develop including political, environmental justice and clean energy.
  • Data. Responsible for maintaining effective data management systems that support chapter goals and increase activist engagement and list growth. Updates processes as needed. Manages and supports volunteers and staff in utilizing best data management practices and identifying additional training resources when needed. Maximizes chapter use of Salesforce and other CRM tools. 
  • Management. Manages and supports personnel in assigned operational or program areas. Manages projects to advance chapter goals, in coordination with volunteer leaders, contractors and partner organizations. Works with Chapter Director to recruit, hire and manage staff to carry out organizational objectives. Expands and maintains strong volunteer teams, volunteer structure, and additional capacity such as interns to develop and implement the major programs of the chapter, including meeting equity, environmental justice, and outdoor program goals. Represents chapter leadership as relates to national Sierra Club capacities and programs.


The successful candidate must have the following skills and experience:
  • Experience in fundraising, databases, and strategic communications 
  • Experience with managing staff 
  • Proven results in fundraising 
  • Substantial experience and demonstrated ability and effectiveness working with volunteers
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills  
  • Strong analytical skills
  • Proficient computer skills
  • Some flexibility in schedule for evenings and weekends


The strongest candidates will also demonstrate the following skills, experience and competencies:
  • Experience with legislative, electoral and administrative advocacy


$80,000 - $90,000 a year
Compensation and Benefits
The salary range for this position is $80,000 - $90,000 annually.

The Sierra Club offers a competitive salary package commensurate with skills and experience plus excellent benefits that include medical, dental, and vision coverage, and a retirement savings 401(k) plan. 

This is a category 3 exempt, non-represented, managerial position.
