General Role Description
Design and test automation systems for industrial applications, provide team and technical leadership in the application, engineering, unit testing, and system testing of the hardware and software components of custom control systems.
Role Accountabilities
- Design the industrial automation system configuration and identify the components that achieve the end-user requirements
- Analyze contract and/or proposal OEM functional descriptions and user requirements in order to establish the final design the of the proposed automation systems, identify the system components and coordinate the development of all necessary engineering design documents and functional descriptions/specifications
- Ensure compliance with Business Unit engineering processes and procedures, including design standards, structured software modules, and unit/system test plans for project engineering and test schedules to achieve quality of the project related deliverables
- Provide technical and administrative oversight of the system design, development, and testing of control systems; this could range up to 10 projects at any given time
- Review software and hardware designs made by the Control and/or Hardware Engineers and/or suppliers to assure they meet the defined functional requirements for the specified control system
- Coordinate system development tasks to include design, integration, and formal testing
- Implement specific pieces of software as necessary
- Ensure the functional descriptions of operation reflect the system elements as designed
- Design unit/system test plans that demonstrate the functional requirements have been met
- Perform the witness test with the client, as required
- Provide support, troubleshoot, and resolve installation conflicts, interferences, and other problems during commissioning phase, either remotely or at site as required
- Track the configuration and programming progress targets using defined practices in order to establish compliance with the functional requirements at prescribed engineering checkpoints and project progress revisions with the Project Manager
- Assemble all required documentation and user manuals created during the development process as part of the project deliverables in order to transfer essential knowledge to clients and end users
- Ensure that all functional requirements as determined by project specifications and functional design documents have been met, design reviews conducted with good participation from all concerned stakeholders, all shipped/installed software has been tested, and change control policies and procedures are established and followed
- Provide technical leadership and optimize the design, engineering, and testing of control systems
- Assign and direct the work of selected engineers to ensure the system is built and tested on time and within budget
- Establish standards, templates, and guidelines as applied to the automation system using the information gathered in the definition stage and considering human-factor effects in order to satisfy client oriented design criteria and preferences
- Coach associates in specific areas of technical expertise, when identified by management as a function expert

Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor of science in mechatronics, electrical or control engineering or related field or equivalent via education and/or work experience
- 3 years’ experience designing and/or maintaining industrial control systems
- Proficiency in industrial drives, automation and control hardware and software
- Demonstrated knowledge of relevant industrial standards
- Ability to communicate technical concepts clearly and concisely to development team members and clients
- Demonstrated successful working relationships with clients, suppliers, and other internal and external contacts
- Demonstrated successful and positive personal leadership, interpersonal, organizational, administrative, and communication skills
- Demonstrated continuous improvement in areas of responsibility
- Proficiency in MS Office Suite, MS Project
- Availability to travel, domestically and internationally, approximately 15%, with limited notice
Preferred Qualifications
- Proficiency in multiple programming languages.
- Experience in international field engineering assignments
- 3 years’ experience designing drive and automation systems for heavy industry applications
- 3 years’ experience designing and/or maintaining hot/cold rolling control systems and/or metal strip processing line and/or port cranes control systems
