Compensation Range

Job Description Summary

The Scientific Project Manager is responsible for multiple ongoing and overlapping projects in a discovery science research laboratory, including the management of a multi-year research project to create a platform for the pre-clinical validation of treatments for spinal cord injuries (SCI).

Organizational Status

ICORD is a world leading health research centre focused on spinal cord injury. From the lab-based cellular level of understanding injury to rehabilitation and recovery, our researchers are dedicated to the development and translation of more effective strategies to promote prevention, functional recovery, and improved quality of life after spinal cord injury. Located at Vancouver General Hospital in the Blusson Spinal Cord Centre, ICORD is supported by the UBC Faculties of Medicine and Science and is part of the Vancouver Coastal Health Research Institute. This position is supported by the Blusson Integrated Cures Partnership (BICP), funded by the Rick Hansen Foundation. Visit www.icord.org.

The project manager reports jointly to the PI of the Laboratory and the ICORD Managing Director. Works collaboratively with ICORD trainees, faculty and staff. Frequently works with graduate students, scientists and administrators at other Faculty of Medicine research centres and departments as well as Faculty of Science, CMMT, St. Paul s Hospital and UBC Office of Research Services. Supervises the work of and provides training to technicians, graduate students and undergraduate students in the laboratory.

Work Performed

Responsible for the planning and execution of multiple research projects (including a research project to create a platform for the pre-clinical validation of treatments for spinal cord injuries), including: creating and assessing timelines and ensuring efficient time management and productivity; implementing of Good Laboratory Practices (GLP) required for Health Canada approval of candidate treatments going forward for clinical trials.



Performs research and analysis in the laboratory including immunostaining, protein gels / Western blotting, PCR, mouse genotyping and microscopy analysis.



Writes sections for research publications.



Writes grant applications.



Manages enquiries from granting agencies and research partners.



Responsible for project and general laboratory finances, including ensuring compliance with funding agency guidelines, budgeting and reconciling project finances; preparing forecasts, monitoring and controlling of lab expenditures and accounts, overseeing monthly P-Card reconciliation.



Responsible for ensuring productive and collegial communication within the research team by clearly articulating goals, plans and changes using a variety of formats (presentations, group lab meetings, one-on-one meetings, email and other written communication), and ensuring each team member understands his or her role and responsibilities in the project.



Works with Principal Investigator to recruit, hire and supervise research and technical staff. Creates Work Learn proposals and hires/supervises Work Learn students. Manages staff performance and discipline.



Writes ethics protocols. Ensures that all SOPs, laboratory biohazard and animal protocols are up to date and followed by all laboratory members. Develops policies and makes decisions with regards to safety in experimental procedures and general lab practices. Oversees level 2 hazardous material SOPs and all animal-related standard operating procedures. Implements safety protocols and organizational procedures for all project experiments as well as waste management procedures. Investigates and reports accidents.



Performs other related duties as required.

Consequence of Error/Judgement

Errors in work or poor decision-making could negatively impact the scientific integrity of the research group, which subsequently could undermine collaborations as well as success in securing future funding. Error at the lab bench or in properly planning experiments will results in wasted materials and work being repeated which costs money. Poor decision-making or lapses in judgment when overseeing the work of laboratory staff could result in serious injury to laboratory personnel or damage to expensive equipment.

The project manager works independently with wide latitude. Work will be reviewed periodically to assess achievements.

Manages research assistants, graduate and undergraduate students working in the laboratory, and supervises volunteers in the laboratory. Provides direction, scientific expertise and technical knowledge. Ensures that safety policies and procedures are in place and are followed by all members. Trains new lab members in the safe use of materials and equipment and proper research procedures in the lab.

Preferred Qualifications

Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline.GLP Certification an asset.Minimum of three years experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience.Extensive experience in planning and conducting research projects required. Familiarity with UBC policies, procedures and central agencies is required. Effective oral and written communication and organizational skills. Ability to exercise tact, discretion and confidentiality is necessary. Must be self-motivated and able to prioritize, take initiative in determining work priorities. Ability to work under pressure, meet deadlines and work in a team environment is required. Familiarity with Excel, Word, and project management required.
