Compensation Range

The Compensation Range is the span between the minimum and maximum base salary for a position. In the normal course, employees will be hired, transferred or promoted between the minimum and midpoint of the salary range for a job.

Job Summary

The Office of Professional Learning (OPL) is a non-academic service unit within the Faculty of Education. We work with the departments, units and schools in the Faculty and with school districts and educational institutes across the province to build programming that supports the professional development of all types of educators across British Columbia and Canada. We are guided by the Four R's: Respect, Relevance, Reciprocity, and Responsibility.

The Marketing & Communications Specialist develops, leads and implements marketing and communication plans, programs, and activities to promote OPL and our various programs and offerings. Participates in an integrated and coordinated approach to development of marketing and communications strategies, procedures, and policies.


Organizational Status
Reports to the Manager, Marketing & Communications. Works collaboratively with the Marketing & Communications team and Management team and Dean’s Office communication staff and Faculty communicators. Maintains strong working relationships with faculty members and staff as well as other campus communicators. 

Work Performed

  • Plans and implements well-coordinated, effective communication and marketing plans and vehicles for OPL and the various units and programs we support.

  • Drafts strategies and policies to ensure alignment on internal and external communication and marketing guidelines, shares best practices, and maintains UBC and Faculty brand standards.

  • Responsible for researching, writing, editing, and curating content and preparing marketing & communication plans, advertising copy, reports, and articles. Consults with content providers and units within the Faculty on messages, audience, delivery and best practices for marketing and communications. Determines the appropriate channel(s) and distribution of messages.

  • Designs and produces effective and visually appealing communications and promotional materials and digital assets to support the needs of OPL and the units and programs we support. Materials include digital and physical signage, newsletters, presentations, digital and print ads, promotional products, social media content, posters and brochures. Coordinates photo and video shoots as needed.

  • Participates in strategic planning with Manager, Marketing & Communications. Meets regularly with OPL Management team, providing regular updates through informal and formal communication.  

  • Serves as an internal advisor to Faculty staff regarding marketing & communications best-practices and provides guidance and assistance with major website updates/developments and other large-scale projects.

  • Develops, measures and reports on the success of marketing & communications initiatives. Oversees the use of Google Analytics and other analytical software to ensure data is being collected and used when making marketing and communication deliverables and decisions.

  • Oversees numerous websites and webpages. Makes web updates up to an intermediate level of complexity. Works with web developers for more advanced updates and changes.

  • Liaises with and/or oversees freelance and contract workers to ensure delivery of brand-aligned marketing & communications deliverables.

  • Liaises with a network of marketing and communications professionals across campus to share best practices, collaborate on special projects, and stay informed of UBC brand guidelines and initiatives. 

  • Upholds UBC brand standards for work completed within OPL and in collaboration with on-campus and off-campus program partners. Ensures compliance with industry regulations and standards (e.g., Canada's Anti-Spam Legislation or Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act). 


Consequence of Error/Judgement
This role exercises initiative and judgement in establishing priorities and carrying tasks through to completion, and must demonstrate tact and discretion. Works independently and as a team member within established guidelines and standards. Work is reviewed in terms of achievement of defined goals. Makes decisions regarding writing and editing communication materials, and communications projects and service contracts. The Marketing & Communication Specialist works with all groups across the Faculty to serve the marketing and communication needs of OPL and related programs. Error in the performance of duties or inappropriate disclosure of confidential information may adversely affect the image and reputation of the unit, Faculty and the university. The performance of this position can have a major impact on how OPL and the Faculty of Education is perceived by its internal and external community.

Supervision Received
Works independently under supervision of the Manager, Marketing & Communications with guidance from the Director.

Supervision Given
May manage and coordinate the work of staff where needed. Explains work procedures to new or inexperienced staff. May direct the work of internal and external service providers.

Minimum Qualifications
Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. Minimum five years of related experience, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • A university degree in marketing, communications, or related discipline. Certificate in project management an asset.

  • Demonstrated success working in an entrepreneurial, creative and fast-paced environment. 

  • Exceptionally strong project management and time management skills. 

  • Ability to conduct needs analysis, plan, organize, manage, monitor, complete, and evaluate projects within allocated time and resources.

  • Ability to effectively manage multiple tasks and priorities. Ability to prioritize and work effectively under pressure to meet deadlines.

  • Ability to maintain accuracy and attention to detail.

  • Experience with digital and social advertising platforms such as Google Ads and LinkedIn. 

  • Experience with growing and managing social media channels. 

  • Able to deal effectively with staff at all levels, work independently, work to tight deadlines and manage competing priorities. 

  • Excellent oral and written communication, analytical and organizational skills. 

  • Appropriate computer experience, including MS Office suite and teams. Experience making web updates with HTML and CSS at a basic level is required, additional knowledge and skills are an asset. Experience with a variety of social media including Hootsuite required. Experience with Adobe Creative Suite, Canva, and project management software an asset. 

  • Demonstrated ability to keep abreast of technology developments and marketing trends in relevant areas and a commitment to continuously adding to their knowledge base and skills. 

  • Demonstrated leadership skills. 

  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team. 

  • Familiarity with UBC systems and procedures an asset.
