Job Overview

The Psychiatric Registered Nurse is a licensed direct care provider of psychiatric evaluation and medication management services. This member is part of a 24/7 mobile psychiatric and community mental health team is responsible for conducting psychiatric health assessments; assessing physical health needs; making appropriate referrals to community physicians; providing management and administration of medication in conjunction with the psychiatrist/physician; providing of a range of treatment, rehabilitation, and support services; and sharing administrative responsibility with medical assistants and other ancillary staff. When performing nursing duties, this role functions under the clinical supervision of the provider in physician practice or clinic setting, assisting in the preparation and delivery of ambulatory patient care as directed by the provider(s) and other licensed clinical personnel. Clinical duties are skillfully and consistently performed per established clinical policy and procedure. Data entry skills are required of all aspects of this role, as each patient encounter is entered into an electronic medical record (EMR).


Brief Description of Responsibilities and Duties

Creates and maintains appropriate medication tracking and narcotic counting system. Maintains the security of narcotic medication. Maintains the medication room and ensures that it remains up to licensing/pharmacy standards, including room temperature, appropriate storage, refrigerator temperatures, etc. Under the direction of the Nurse Practitioner/Psychiatrist, manages the system of getting medication to clients and integrating medication support into clients' individual treatment plans. Manages pharmaceuticals and medical supplies. Assures that all needed medical supplies are appropriately stocked and medication orders/changes are noted and ordered in a timely fashion; expired supplies removed. In collaboration with the team psychiatrist, coordinate, schedule, and conducts medical assessments of client physical health, making appropriate referrals to community physicians for further assessment and treatment, and coordinate psychiatric treatment with medical treatment;Vital signs are typically obtained prior to performing a physical assessment. Vital signs include temperature recorded in Fahrenheit, pulse, respiratory rate, blood pressure, and oxygen saturation using a pulse oximeter. Provide psychiatric case management for an assigned group of clients including coordinating care and monitoring medication adherence;Providing education and symptom management, reporting changes to psychiatry and wraparound team as clients' needs change;Educating and supporting clients' families and advocating for clients' rights and preferences;Consult with community agencies and families to maintain coordination in the treatment process;Document client progress to maintain a permanent record of client activity according to established methods and procedures;Take the lead role or participate in providing medication administration including injections and other medical services in the home and clinic setting;Participate in treatment, rehabilitation, and support services.


Minimum Pre-Employment Requirements and Qualifications
  • Minimum Required Education: Associate’s, Bachelor’s, or Master’s degree in Nursing Practice
  • Minimum Required Experience: At least 1-2 years providing direct client care to persons receiving treatment for psychiatric disorders; Ability to work with seriously mentally ill adults; Knowledge of psychotic and mood disorders, their related medications and potential side effects; Must demonstrate specific additional training or experience in psychological therapies, building a therapeutic alliance, dealing with challenging behavior, and the administration of psychiatric medication. Must be knowledgeable of psychotropic side effects and how to evaluate for them (i.e. AIMS, observation).
  • Preferred Experience: 3+ years of experience as a psychiatric nurse provider; Experience in telemedicine
  • Licenses/Certifications: RN licensure in New Mexico; CPR and First Aid certified; No suspension/exclusion/debarment from participation in federal health care programs (e.g., Medicare, Medicaid, SCHIP) Must successfully pass CYFD Criminal Background Checks (including local, state, and FBI background checks). Must become certified by Crisis Intervention Prevention (CPI) a non-violent crisis intervention training (agency provided training).Must possess a sincere commitment, temperament and skills to work with seriously mentally ill. Possesses a values base consistent with the philosophy of the Agency. Has the ability to consistently establish positive relationships, and to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team. Must be computer literate in order to effectively maintain compliance with state and federal standards and requirements for use of computerized client documentation, data systems, etc. Must also have and maintain a driver’s license, clean driving record and active auto insurance coverage.
