About the Team

Workday’s Cloud Connectivity team is a dynamic group of Software Development Engineers and Site Reliability Engineers (SREs) focused on building and maintaining the foundational connectivity and service mesh infrastructure that powers Workday’s services in the public cloud. We are responsible for ensuring secure, reliable, and efficient communication between our microservices and data centers. Our team values automation, continuous improvement, and collaboration to deliver highly available and scalable solutions. We are constantly exploring and adopting new cloud-native technologies to enhance our platform. If you are passionate about building and operating critical infrastructure in a fast-paced, multi-cloud environment, the Cloud Connectivity team is the place for you.

About the Role

This role will support one or more direct or indirect contracts with the U.S. Federal Government which, due to federal government security requirements, mandates that all Workday personnel working on the contracts be United States citizens (naturalized or native).

Workday is seeking a dedicated and motivated Software Development Engineer to join our Cloud Connectivity team. In this role, you will be instrumental in the development, deployment, and operation of Workday’s service mesh infrastructure, demonstrating modern service technologies. You will work closely with other engineers and SREs to build robust, scalable, and highly available solutions that enable seamless communication and traffic management for our microservices in the public cloud. This role offers a great opportunity to work with ground breaking cloud-native technologies and contribute to the core infrastructure of a leading enterprise SaaS platform.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Design, develop, and implement solutions for managing and operating Workday’s global service mesh.

  • Contribute to the automation of service mesh deployment, configuration, and lifecycle management using infrastructure-as-code principles.

  • Develop and maintain tools and scripts to monitor the health, performance, and security of the service mesh infrastructure.

  • Collaborate with development teams to onboard their services onto the service mesh and provide guidance on standard methodologies.

  • Participate in on-call rotations to ensure the availability and reliability of the service mesh and related connectivity infrastructure.

  • Fix and resolve incidents related to the service mesh and network connectivity, working with multi-functional teams as needed.

  • Implement changes to production systems with a focus on minimizing risk and ensuring stability.

  • Contribute to the design and implementation of observability solutions (logging, metrics, tracing) for the service mesh.

  • Document technical designs, operational procedures, and fixing guides.

  • Actively participate in code reviews and knowledge sharing within the team.

  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of our infrastructure and processes, finding opportunities for automation and optimization.

About You

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field, or 5+ years of equivalent practical experience in software development or infrastructure engineering.

  • 5+ years of experience in software development with proficiency in at least one of the following languages: Go, Python, Java, or similar.

  • 5+ years experience working with public cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure, GCP).

  • 3+ years experience with infrastructure-as-code tools such as Terraform or CloudFormation.

Other Qualifications:

  • Experience with service mesh technologies (e.g., Istio, Linkerd).

  • Solid understanding of networking principles, including TCP/IP, DNS, load balancing, and routing.

  • Strong problem-solving skills, with the ability to analyze logs, metrics, and traces to identify root causes.

  • Familiarity with containerization technologies such as Docker and orchestration platforms like Kubernetes.

  • Experience with Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) principles and practices, including monitoring, alerting, and incident management.

  • Experience building and operating highly available and scalable systems in a production environment.

  • Familiarity with security standard methodologies for cloud environments and service mesh technologies.

  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines and automation tools.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across teams.

  • A proactive and self-motivated approach to learning and problem-solving.

  • Experience with observability tools such as Prometheus, Grafana, Datadog, or similar.

  • Experience with scripting and automation using tools like Bash or Python.

Our Approach to Flexible Work

With Flex Work, we’re combining the best of both worlds: in-person time and remote. Our approach enables our teams to deepen connections, maintain a strong community, and do their best work. We know that flexibility can take shape in many ways, so rather than a number of required days in-office each week, we simply spend at least half (50%) of our time each quarter in the office or in the field with our customers, prospects, and partners (depending on role). This means you'll have the freedom to create a flexible schedule that caters to your business, team, and personal needs, while being intentional to make the most of time spent together. Those in our remote "home office" roles also have the opportunity to come together in our offices for important moments that matter.

Pursuant to applicable Fair Chance law, Workday will consider for employment qualified applicants with arrest and conviction records.

Workday is an Equal Opportunity Employer including individuals with disabilities and protected veterans.
