Summary of Duties
The Extension Coordinator is responsible for providing oversight and leadership for the Christmas tree and Community Integrated Pest Management (IPM) programs, including originating and/or developing formal education programs related to Christmas trees and Community IPM for delivery to Christmas tree growers, nursery managers, landscape managers, urban foresters, community and commercial horticulturalists and others. They will have specialized subject matter knowledge and the ability to coordinate and lead multi-state and multi-institutional programs, researchers and extension specialists.
This position will be an important member of the A GIFT SEED (Accelerated Genetic Improvement of Fir Through Sequencing, Economics, Extension, & Diagnostics) project team and the Community IPM program at Washington State University (WSU). It involves collaboration with other extension program staff, community partners, and other program constituents to ensure the program and activities meet guidelines/expectations/objectives/policies & procedures of WSU Extension and
project programming under the direction of the WSU Extension faculty.
Manage Gift Seed Program Materials | 45%
Create, manage/oversee materials related to the A GIFT SEED program in the western US. Duties include developing materials such as pocket guides, factsheets, social media posts, and web content with information regarding benefits of genetically improved Christmas trees, tree culture and care, impacts of climate change, pest and disease management recommendations, economic aspects of Christmas tree production, consumer evaluation panel results, and goals related to deployment of genetically improved fir Christmas trees, conducting grower surveys, organizing workshops and webinars, and leading collaborations with project members from other regions. The project is led by North Carolina State University.
Community IPM | 45%
Co-develop and create outreach materials for pest management professionals, community and commercial horticulturalists such as fact sheets, Extension bulletins, and web content. Coordinate outreach activities such as webinars, workshops and Extension events. Assist and lead field research and data collection of IPM applied research and demonstration at the Puyallup Research and Extension Center (PREC).
Administration, Reports, and Recordkeeping | 5%
Purchase, maintain, and inventory supplies and materials used in the Urban IPM and A GIFT SEED projects.
Complete and submit all reports, evaluation, tracking, expenses, time slip, TA’s and other project and position related paperwork and presentations in a timely manner and in compliance with Funding Agency, University, and State/Federal requirements.

Additional Information:
This is a full time (100% FTE), temporary position. This position is overtime eligible.
Temporary End Date:
This is a 12-month position. Renewal is dependent on the need for extension and/or if additional funding is secured to extend employment.
Monthly Salary:
$4,386.85 - $5,483.55 | Commensurate with experience and qualifications
In accordance with RCW 49.58.110, the above salary reflects the full salary range for this position. Individual placement within the range is based on the candidate’s current experience, education, skills, and abilities related to the position.

Required Qualifications
A Bachelor’s degree in a relevant extension program discipline and three (3) years of related program experience. A Masters degree in a related field may be substituted for up to one year of the required experience. Any combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis.
Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both verbally and in writing, with industry stakeholders.
Relevant knowledge in agriculture and experience working with Christmas trees, nurseries, and ornamental/landscape plants.
Relevant knowledge of urban, garden and horticultural pests.
Experience using a computer and software such as word processing, spreadsheets, social media, website development, and email.
Demonstrated skills in developing educational content and resources across platforms.
Demonstrated experience organizing and delivering outreach to industry stakeholders through workshops, talks and/or training sessions.
Ability to lead collaborations with diverse people, researchers, Extension colleagues, staff, and students.
Evidence of ability to develop an effective extension outreach program.
Knowledge of applied field research and demonstration.
Must have, or be able to obtain by time of hire, a valid driver’s license and meet requirements in accordance with SPPM 7.10 and departmental driving standards.
Ability to travel.
Preferred Qualifications
Master’s degree in Horticulture/Plant Science, phytopathology, and/or entomology.
Bilingual (English / Spanish).
Experience in managing volunteers.
